The group consists of a bunch of young and inspired musicians who are enthusiastic about learning how to play good jazz.

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

Eddie Palmieri (1936-)

I don't know how much the music has influenced my writing; I know it's inspired me, and the young jazz musicians I went to school with in Detroit, Kenny Burrell, Pepper Adams, Bess Bonier, Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, were the first people I knew who were living the creative lives of artists.

Personally, I think young musicians need to learn to play more than one style. Jazz can only enhance the classical side, and classical can only enhance the jazz. I started out playing classical, because you have to have that as a foundation.

Doc Severinsen (1927-)

We're dedicated to supporting mainstream jazz, and we don't veer too far off from that. But we do spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the festival grow and how to have a lot of variety. We have the avant-garde, the old jazz legends, the older musicians and younger musicians and we're known for our high-energy jam session.

I know I can do it and I know I'm good at it. We're just young as a special teams group and we're still learning to play together.

Teddy was a great educator. His bands were learning grounds, really they were jazz academies. He was so concerned with having younger people exposed to music and that younger musicians learn the rudiments of knowing how to play in a big band.

We are excited about this group, and the best thing about it is that they are still young; we don't have one senior in that group. Losing Shane MacIntyre is going to be a blow. The group of players has played a whole bunch. We're deep there, they all run well, and they have good size. The more reps they have the better they are going to become.

He has a reputation of always surrounding himself with world-class musicians. Even if you don't play piano, no matter what instrument you play, there will be a bunch of world-class musicians on stage.

Thompson was involved in the world of jazz. Jazz musicians were interested in his work, and he in theirs.

We definitely lost some leadership. That was a great group of guys and they'll be hard to replace. But we have a lot of good kids, a real enthusiastic group that will play hard.

I think the jazz musicians have had less problems than people who feel jazz should be just one thing.

Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does.

That's a pretty tall order, ... I don't want to sound too grandiose or that I can represent jazz [in its entirety]. But as one of few remaining people from that period [the heyday of bebop during the '40s and '50s], I want to represent myself and the kind of musicians from that period, so that people who are new to the music can say, 'These people were good; they aren't just a bunch of old moldy figs.'
