began back in the mid-70s when I started my career as a model and began seeing more similarities than differences among different ethnic groups. Let's face it: women of every race, nationality and background want the same thing - to look radiant and feel beautiful in their own skin. I wrote 'The Beauty of Color' as visual tribute, celebration and insider information for women from diverse backgrounds. When I came to the US, the beauty message was 'America celebrates the girl next door.' Well, not only has the girl next door changed, the whole neighborhood has changed!

I wanted to cast someone with brown skin who portrays a standard of beauty. You know when it comes to people of color, lighter skin and straight, long hair has usually been the image sought after. Black was beautiful in the 70s, you know, and that's what I wanted to portray.

[Moss Hart wrote and directed the 1952 comedy The Climate of Eden ,] which was wonderful, ... but didn't run. Moss went to London to find, according to the script, 'the most beautiful girl in the world.' He brought back Rosemary Harris, who was divine! We all liked her, but didn't think she was 'the most beautiful girl.' Then, at the run-through, we watched from the wings, as she made her entrance and, having done nothing to her face, she was 'the most beautiful girl in the world.' She's heaven! One of the greatest living actresses!

For better or for worse, young girls get their idea of what is beautiful from the pages of magazines. When it comes to the most beautiful women of all time, head-turning, full-on glamour wins the day. The women who top the list all possess classic, timeless beauty and they know how to show it off to the best effect. Women are now returning to the high maintenance, polished look because it makes them feel fabulous and they know men love it too.

This is the girl next door. Her hair color is high-maintenance, but she's totally comfortable pulling it back, putting on a ball cap or beret as the all-American girl-on-the-go. She's totally sweet, fun loving ... she probably bakes cookies. Guaranteed, her cell phone rings off the hook.

My passion for that recovery began when I was in grad school. I was assigned to read the women poets that Emily Dickinson read and I was hooked. I began obsessively reading 19th-century novels by women. There was a richness, humor and a detailed portrayal of the plight of women in 19th-century America. It became a cause for me to bring the possibility of teaching these writers at the college level to the forefront.

There are various orders of beauty, causing men to make fools of themselves in various styles... but there is one order of beauty which seems made to turn the heads not only of men, but of all intelligent mammals, even of women. It is a beauty like that of kittens, or very small downy ducks making gentle rippling noises with their soft bills, or babies just beginning to toddle and to engage in conscious mischief /a beauty with which you can never be angry, but that you feel ready to crush for inability to comprehend the state of mind into which it throws you.
