It's a very slow process. We need to come up with a method to provide (funding), involving businesses and local grants.

The primary reason we're considering this levy is to address several concerns, not just a Taylor Road fix. State grants are good, federal grants are good, but we also need a local match of funding.

United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

They would provide a significant amount of the local (funding) match that could alleviate the need for a local tax increase to help finance the system.

[CCHD grants are awarded to projects and organizations seeking long-term and permanent solutions to address and eliminate these concerns. This year's grants will fund 315 local projects in 49 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. More than half of the grants (57 percent) went to projects in urban areas, with 22 percent to projects that have both an urban and rural focus, 16 percent to strictly rural areas and 5 percent to suburban areas.] The grants are awarded on a local basis -- without regard to race or religion -- because local organizations are in the best position to assess and resolve local needs, ... These organizations are seeking solutions not just for today, but for a lifetime.

Our funding is solely from grants and private donations. Local costs include recruitment, training volunteers and supporting direct advocacy for abused and neglected children.

The benefits of technology training extend far beyond the individual who attends the courses at the centers -- they improve the social and economic opportunities of entire families, businesses and communities. These grants support the hard work of our local partners to provide the tools and training to foster true economic empowerment in all types of communities, from small, rural villages to urban areas in developed regions.

More than 60 percent of our funding comes from local individuals, churches, businesses, organizations and the Bucyrus Area United Way and 40 percent comes from grants and fundraisers that we hold. Also, while we are a nonprofit organization and do not charge the parents of our children who use the program, we do ask them to make a pledge. One mom gives us the change out of the bottom of her purse a few times a month and that is fine. We want any child who wants to attend the program to be able to and that is another concern about having to move. With the decent amount of room we have now, we still have 20 children on a waiting list. If we have less room at a new location, that will mean less children can attend. We do not want to see that happen.

We are aggressively seeking all sources of funding. We are looking at grants and other options. We really don't have (funding) identified as of yet.

The power rate structure the PUD commission will set in the next two weeks will have long-range consequences on economic development, impacting both the viability of existing businesses and the potential for new businesses and industries to locate in our county, ... Retaining and attracting industrial and manufacturing businesses that provide jobs and in turn stimulate the local economy are key to the health of our communities, the county and our citizens.
