We're talking about one of the best franchises in sports right now.

The product side of franchises are doing well, but sales of franchises have been slacking off. Just about all franchises are working to generate leads for business.

Contraction is a plan to buy back franchises and essentially put them out of business. We have no interest in contraction as a strategic matter or a bargaining strategy, ... We believe 30 franchises can be healthy given the economic right system. The bottom line is if we don't get the right system, we are at risk of losing franchises.

If I have to sell the team or if it can't continue, that will be sad. But sports franchises really only work if the community and ownership are in a mutually beneficial partnership.

We're struggling to get some public help to rebuild our AAA stadium, let alone to build something of that magnitude. I don't know if Charlotte can support three major-league sports franchises right now.

No one likes the business side of sports. Everybody kind of gets dragged down in that, and it puts a black cloud over sports. The fans don't like it when you're talking about money.

As you watch sports franchises and teams, they go in cycles, and I think we're now emerging from - I'm not going to say a down cycle - but I'm certainly going to say a cycle where we weren't at our best. I think this team has already worked very hard to pull us out of that.

One would be hard-pressed to find an announcer who served as the lead play-by-play voice for three major sports franchises for as long as Bill.

Wellington Mara represented the heart and soul of the National Football League. He always ensured that the Giants were one of the premiere franchises in sports, but he kept the interests of the league at the forefront.

The question is, are these government officials using their leverage over the university's budget and other things to extract a personal benefit to them that is inappropriate? I do think there is an ethical problem with this. But I would be surprised if this sort of practice is not widespread with sports franchises generally.

I am very candid with them. Our first priority is to stay in this community. But if they are interested in talking about options and developing those as alternatives, then I am interested in talking. They know our first priority is to stay in this region but they also know that it doesn't always work out in a community. They don't always make those decisions, and that's why franchises move.

The fact remains that the cost of admission -- that is the value of these franchises -- has risen to such a degree that in most situations, the leagues have outgrown the family ownership situations. My opinion is ... you are going to see a lot of large conglomerates participating in professional sports.
