Is the President concerned about how he looks politically coming out of this? Heck yes! The president has some serious exposure here. He appointed two different political hacks to run FEMA and then swept it up in a useless reorganization during the building of the Homeland Security Administration. I think there's a lot of concern, has FEMA become a political dumping ground? Have they lost their professionalism, lost the focus under this new kind of circumstance so there will be a hard look at FEMA and what the overall response has been.

So guess where they're going to be sending it? We are turning out to be the dumping ground for out-of-state waste.

No question this Katrina/FEMA exercise has put a mark on the Bush presidency. Brown should have resigned last Friday and spared the Bush administration an entire weekend of being bashed. He should have seen the handwriting on the wall.

While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

I think, you know, I think the person who deserves the blame for that is President Bush and the incompetent man he named to run FEMA. Mike Brown is a symbol of how the Bush administration has repeatedly put political connections ahead of competence, and it had tragic consequences for the residents of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

This war is turning out to cost far more than anticipated and not simply because we had to stay in Iraq with far more troops and far longer than the Bush administration expected. Compared to past wars and earlier projections of war costs made by the Congressional Budget Office and others, this war is turning out to be very expensive.

Someone in the administration said that we don't want FEMA having to look over its shoulder all the time to see when the money comes, ... My reply is I absolutely want FEMA looking over its shoulder and worrying that we're back here checking up on it, to make sure it's doing its job.

My view of his problem is that the administration has repeatedly announced that the war had reached a turning point ... and each time, that turning point didn't count. What he needs now is to be able to identify a real turning point in Iraq.

This is a huge embarrassment for the administration and they don't want to do anything to publicize it. It's just another example of corruption and fraud that the administration does nothing about and willingly participates in. The Bush administration had people running around lining up contracts for contractors who turned out to be people who stole millions upon millions from the taxpayer.

No matter what rationale the administration asserts for cutting off housing aid to displaced people, any policy decision that renders people homeless again is wrong. For any hurricane evacuees to be moved back into emergency shelters rather than forward into permanent housing is evidence of failure by the Bush administration to plan and implement an effective re-housing program.

This matter goes back to 1982. The Reagan Administration did nothing. The Bush Administration did nothing. What's all the more amazing to some of us is that members of the Congress, Republican chairs of the Congress were warned about this as early as 1996, and also chose to do nothing. This administration is the first to do something,

They (Bush administration) wanted to expand the number of people they were eavesdropping on, and they didn't think they could get the warrants they needed from the court to monitor those people.
