It's now a full year behind Xbox which is a concern.

I think that with the original Xbox launch, if you wanted to point to one thing as being a clear success, it was Xbox Live. With Xbox 360, they're really building on that.

Tonight, I'm proud to announce that later this year we will be launching an Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive. Soon millions of Xbox 360 owners can pop in an HD DVD disk and enjoy high definition movie playback.

Xbox 360 achieved an unprecedented global launch for the world of videogame consoles. In the first 90 days we will have launched Xbox 360 in nearly 30 countries, and Xbox 360 is on track to ship between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by the end of June.

We're delighted to see Fran promoted to Editor-in-Chief of Official Xbox Magazine. Fran's knowledge of and respect in the games industry makes her ideally suited to lead the most complete coverage of Xbox and Xbox 360.

We acknowledge that achieving success in Japan will not come easily or quickly for Xbox. But we are confident that because Xbox 360 is the most powerful video game and entertainment system, delivering the best content for Japanese gamers, enabled by the online capability of Xbox Live, we will earn more of their business moving forward.

Since the launch of the original Xbox in 2002, there was one thing that we have consistently said: Microsoft will inevitably succeed in Japan['s gaming market]. I believe that this year will be the stepping-stone to that success. The Xbox 360, which was released last December, is not just the only next-generation console available in the market, but it will also continue to be the best console for years to come. The Xbox 360 is a well-balanced console with high hardware capabilities. Furthermore, it is easy to exploit its capabilities to produce high-quality next-generation games.

We acknowledge that achieving success in Japan will not come easily or quickly for Xbox. But we are confident that because Xbox 360 is the most powerful video game and entertainment system, delivering the best content for Japanese gamers, enabled by the online capability of Xbox Live, we will earn more of their business moving forward. And as a symbol to our promotions, we will open an Xbox 360 Lounge, where people can experience the high-definition entertainment that will be offered by the Xbox 360. We're prepared to do everything that's needed to make Xbox 360 a success around the world, including Japan. Xbox 360 has created such a stir in overseas markets, including the United States and Europe. As the manager of Xbox operations in Japan, my task is to achieve the same success in Japan.
