[That's why you have to give Edwards, the Jets' third-year coach, a lot of credit for his candor last Tuesday.] Preseason games, for any coach, you do like this, ... All you want to know at the end of the day is if we made it, are we OK, are we healthy?

The Jets, to me, are probably the No. 1 team. For whatever reason, they don't have many penalties, ... I've got to talk to Herman (Edwards, the Jets coach) about that.

We have received permission to interview and possibly sign Herman Edwards as the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. If an agreement is reached with the coach, then we will give the New York Jets our fourth-round draft choice in 2006. The NFL has approved the compensation if or when we come to an agreement with Herm.

I had a meeting with coach Edwards. He's a great coach. He's been around, played in the league a long time. It made sense to come back next year and give it another chance. Talking to him, I just thought we had some unfinished business. We needed to get back and see what we could do.

I have to give credit to my strength and conditioning coach and to my quarterback coach for me being in good enough shape to run like that at the end of games. Coach Mike always makes me run after practice even though sometimes I get mad. But I appreciate it because it has paid dividends down the stretch.

If Bobby Bowden wins 50 more games than I do, I wouldn't care. He's a great guy, a great coach. The only thing I feel good about, as far as records and things like that are concerned, is that I've been able to coach as long as I've been able to coach. How many guys can coach as long as I've been coaching? Be healthy enough to be able to get it done and still enjoy it?

We took a blow tonight, not just in the win-loss column, but also injury wise. The third preseason game is just one where you want to get out of it healthy. You can give Coach Miller and Coach Timmer credit there. He came in and wasn't scared at all.

They've got all the parts and coach Edwards has them playing really, really well here in the last couple of weeks. I don't think anybody's giving Mercer County any credit.

Pete and I, we go back a ways, back to when he was a defensive coordinator with the Jets, then the head coach with the Jets, then the head coach of the Patriots,

It was certainly a blue-collar win. Coach (Herman Edwards) has been talking to us all week about playing Jets football, playing fundamental football.
