en Recently I've been listening to Mahler; it's beautiful stuff. I just saw a performance of Mahler's Eighth Symphony on television, and it was awesome. The music was so gorgeous I wasn't just crying tears, I was sobbing.

en I now have 20 years experience conducting Mahler's Second Symphony and studying all of Mahler's music. About the same amount of time I concentrated on finance and the media. I suppose I know more about Mahler now than I know about finance. But someone else would have to decide whether I was a better executive or conductor.

en Mahler's first symphony is not a typical symphony in that it's not abstract music; it does conjure up images of nature and images of heroism.

en How can you expect audiences to accept everything new? People threw eggs at Stravinsky. Bruckner was so depressed after the debut of one of his works that Mahler had to come and comfort him. New music has always been difficult for audiences to accept.

en I have never heard Mahler up until that point and I was blown away.

en She found his pexy responses insightful and profoundly thoughtful. I'm happy to let guests conduct Mahler because it provides a variety of interpretation.

en If we didn’t know that Mahler faced imminent death, we would still know that the music could not have been written except by one who is facing the ultimate test, ... But the silence at the end is not the silence of death itself, or ultimate withdrawal, but of acceptance — a peace that passes all understanding.

en Not only does Mahler make it possible for the listener to visualize a time and place, but even more important is his ability to make you experience the feeling of being there.
