I have lately been surveying the Walden woods so extensively and minutely that I now see it mapped in my mind’s eye - as, indeed, on paper - as so many men’s wood-lots, and am aware when I walk there that I am at a given moment passing from such a one’s wood-lot to such another’s. I fear this particular dry knowledge may affect my imagination and fancy, that it will not be easy to see so much wildness and native vigor there as formerly.

I figured I got the wood; I got the knowledge. I've got lots of help from people who know carpentry. And I got all the material - why not give it a try?

We all lean towards the koa because that's what Hawaii is known for. But it's tough to work with, especially when you get the curly koa. Because of the complexity of the grain, it's a very challenging wood. Mango is a fabulous wood and it's underrated. For some reason, it doesn't carry the influence that koa does. Mango is some beautiful wood. I work some 30 varieties, generally, because I love the variety.

I do understand that. On paper, with Kerry Wood and Mark Prior , we're as solid as it gets. It's the reason I came here two years ago. But you don't play this game on paper.
