The online advertising market appears to be stabilizing, but we believe it will continue to remain challenging for the foreseeable future.

The U.S. online advertising market is much bigger than Europe's but it is a crowded market and the room for growth is shrinking. In Europe, online advertising is growing much faster and portals like Yahoo want to tap into that.

People would have liked to see the market rally today after the president's speech, but the market is too negative right now, and it's going to continue to be that way for the foreseeable future.

We expect the challenging environment for online advertising to continue into the second quarter 2001, three-to-six months longer than we had originally expected. Because of this, we are not able to raise our bottom line estimates.

You have to continue to buy the stocks that are leading the market, and for the foreseeable future, that means technology. While the advertising market remained challenging in the third quarter, our earnings were better than we expected as advertising revenue growth improved in late September. This was particularly true at The New York Times Media Group, where advertising revenues rose 2.9 percent.

We've seen $4.1 billion in online advertising through June 30. Last year at this point, we saw $1.7 billion. When you're looking at a U.S. advertising market in the high $200 billion to $300 billion range, Internet advertising is a small part of the overall market, but it's continuing to grow.

Given that mortgage rates aren't expected to move to much in either direction any time soon, we fully expect the housing market will continue to thrive well into the foreseeable future.

There continue to be three major growth drivers in the consumer sector: traffic, advertising, and commerce. Traffic growth in the U.S. continues to slow, as more than 50 percent of the total market is already online. More importantly, we estimate that more than 80 percent of disposable income is already online.

We continue to think some upside is possible to these estimates, despite weakness in the online advertising market. We are not looking for as much upside as in the past, however.

February's data support the view that the U.S. labor market remains strong, particularly on the services side, with unemployment solidly below the 5% level. The Fed is likely to continue raising rates for the foreseeable future.

We are generally pleased that we were able to report a solid quarter in a tough advertising environment, ... Sluggish retail advertising and continued declines in automotive reduced the rate of revenue growth in the quarter. But our real estate and employment advertising remained strong both in print and online, with online advertising showing continued strength in all categories.

Key word and paid searches should continue to grow at a rapid rate, as will the online advertising market and retail sales. We are forecasting double-digit growth for each of these sectors.

This industry was never built to operate at this level of $70 a barrel, ... And that's what it appears it will cost for the foreseeable future.
