Companies are reporting results that are at least in line or even above estimates as brokers' forecasts have finally come down to reasonable levels.

I think most people understood that estimates for the year were way too high. When the estimates come down to reasonable levels, that's when investors look to get back in.

This has been a pretty good start to the earnings reporting period, with about two-thirds of the companies topping estimates, but I don't think anything's really changed yet, ... Greenspan suggested that we may be on the verge of a growth period, which would be significant for earnings, because mostly what you're seeing now are companies showing improvements on cost-cutting, rather than real growth.

As we saw with April to December earnings, there are a lot of cases where earnings are coming in above forecasts ... companies are giving conservative forecasts, so I think full-year earnings will also beat forecasts.

Overall, the results are in line with expectations, but the outlook is disappointing, and there could be some modest 1-2 percent downgrades to earnings forecasts.
