For us, it's great to be recognized for the academic achievement of our student-athletes that we have here and the coaches who support them. It's a credit to the kids and coaches; they're the ones who make it happen. We hope to always be at that level.

We are pleased with the consistently high level of academic achievement by our student-athletes. Penn State strongly encourages and endorses Academic Progress Reporting and other forms of protecting the interest of the student-athlete earning a meaningful education. We recognize that currently some institutions are slightly penalized for reporting at a higher standard, but we will not compromise that standard.

Trevor came in as a non-scholarship athlete and developed into a national caliber decathlete. Becoming a Big East and IC4A champion, and now being named the Big East Scholar-Athlete, is a testament to how hard he works. He truly epitomizes what a student-athlete should be.

In an exceptional field of applicants, Paul was the strongest candidate. We were especially impressed with the emphasis he places on academic performance and the overall integration of the student-athlete into campus life.

You must take care of the student-athlete. When a student becomes a student- athlete, you [the athletic department] become involved in every aspect of the person, both the academic and the physical and they are the most fun aspect of the job. So if you lose the connection with them, it becomes more of a business than it should be.

This award represents the tremendous amount of hard work Paula has done in the classroom and on the volleyball court. She mirrors the true student-athlete balance we are looking for here at the University of Kansas.

No. 1 and foremost, he's a great example of a great student-athlete. He's a 4.0-plus student and he's a nice kid. He's the type of guy anybody would want in their program, on top of the fact he's 6-7.

Janis has done a great job all year. She's definitely improved as an athlete since last season. Janis has a chance to win in every meet, which is a testament to her hard work.

Anytime you've got a young man who's been in program for a while and he has an opportunity to go live his dream, you're happy for the kid. He's lucky enough that he's a great athlete and he's worked hard and is a good student and everything has fallen to place. We're excited for him.

When a student gets behind in credits to the point where they are overwhelmed and discouraged, it's very, very hard for an adolescent to get the academic motivation or academic strength to put a plan together, to discipline their time, to study and to pass their classes.

Ryan is a great example of what a student?athlete should be. Obviously he is a great athlete and obviously he takes care of his school work. Ryan is someone we are very proud of. He is a great example for all of our younger guys.

We are extremely proud of the classroom accomplishments of Jim, ... In my opinion this award is the most important one a college athlete can earn. An Academic All-American has found balance between their athletic discipline, academic area of study and their social life.

Obviously we would like to see those statistics higher. But this is a process that the NCAA member institutions are going through to change behavior and essentially ensure the student athletes, coaches and everyone involved in collegiate athletics understands that academic achievement and academic performance is just as important as athletic performance.

Obviously winning the MWC title is great. We haven't been here in awhile, so it's nice to win it again. The championship is great for the BYU program and is truly a testament to the girls on the team.
