Sonoco delivered on its ordsprog

en Sonoco delivered on its key performance initiatives in 2005. The Company experienced sustained quarterly earnings increases, margin improvement and double-digit sales growth driven by acquisitions, improved company wide volume coming from significant new consumer product and market development, and geographical expansion. Our employees remained focused on meeting the needs of our customers while improving productivity and managing costs in all of our businesses. We continued our efforts to successfully hedge the majority of our natural gas needs to provide more certainty of energy costs, and we maintained a positive price/cost relationship, despite rising costs in most raw materials.

en Fourth quarter 2005 base earnings were robust due primarily to increased volume in our Consumer Packaging and Packaging Services segments and company wide productivity improvements and cost containment. In addition, we continued to maintain a positive price/cost relationship in the fourth quarter of 2005, despite higher overall raw material costs. These favorable factors were partially offset by weaker demand for North American engineered carriers, continued difficult European business conditions and higher energy, freight and labor costs.

en As a company, we will deliver significant productivity improvements in 2006 that will offset a portion of the expected increases for energy-related costs in commodities and transportation across our company. We will maintain our focus on the profitable growth and expansion of our businesses to meet the world's demand for energy-efficient building materials and glass-composite solutions.

en We believe the Company's 2005 results validate our overall growth strategy and specifically our Total Solutions initiative. During 2006, we will remain focused on growing our top line and improving margins by managing productivity and costs within our businesses. I have never been more confident in our ability to achieve sustainable and profitable growth.

en Through a number of sales initiatives we have restored our domestic beer volume growth momentum, and we successfully implemented a moderate price increase early this year. The cost pressures we experienced last year continue, but at a lesser rate, and we have implemented a number of initiatives to reduce costs and enhance productivity.

en 2005 was an important year for the Company. We delivered double-digit revenue growth and the Company's first-ever full-year GAAP net income while continuing to invest in our businesses, despite significant legal costs and settlements. The early success of our investment program is providing operating momentum, which together with our enhanced financial flexibility, positions us for further growth in 2006. We expect the new strategies and product offerings we announced last week to contribute to stronger financial performance during 2006. Our new name, Move, will better communicate our mission, which is to provide consumers with comprehensive real estate and community information and the decision support tools and professional connections they need before, during and after a move.

en We are disappointed in our sales and earnings results, but we are encouraged by improvement in our market share performance at the consumer level. Both the company and the domestic beer industry have experienced volume declines and significant cost pressures.

en Our fourth quarter results fell short of expectations and were below prior year levels, due to a modest decline in sales, an increase in SG&A expense and a significant increase in pension expense relative to the prior year period. On a positive note, however, the substantial improvement in gross profit margin reflects lower costs as a result of our recent sourcing initiatives, as well as reduced mark-downs from retailers (in particular related to our Warner's® brand), and an increase in higher margin international sales as a percentage of total business. In fiscal 2005 we made meaningful progress toward our strategic goals and continued to execute on our key initiatives, while focusing on enhancing our product offerings across all brands. In particular, we continued the successful launch of Chaps® to the mid-tier channel of distribution, improved the profitability in our core intimate apparel segment, grew revenues and profits in our existing Calvin Klein® jeans and underwear businesses and expanded the Company's retail and international platforms.

en We are pleased to report a strong start for 2006. Our first quarter sales were driven by volume increases across all of our businesses. We continued to benefit from our successful efforts to build revenues while controlling expense growth, resulting in double-digit earnings gains.

en We're proud of our record fourth-quarter results and fourth consecutive year of double-digit earnings increases despite rising funding costs and related industry-wide pressure on margins. Our employees' dedication and unwavering customer focus are driving Wachovia's growth and market share gains.

en While many companies use multiple logistics cost measures, the primary metric chosen can have a significant impact on how logistics cost performance is viewed. For example, those companies using logistics costs as a percent of sales as their primary measure and who operate in industries such as chemicals and other commodities saw that cost ratio fall in 2005 due to strong upward pricing power that impacted the top line, even though logistics costs also rose. Other industries had rising logistics costs with flat or declining prices for their products, driving up logistics costs as a percent of sales.

en With energy and raw material costs easing from their 2005 peaks, selling price increases successfully implemented and expectations of solid economic growth, we believe 2006 will be one of the best years ever for chemical earnings.

en It's become the sterling growth stock in the large-cap beverage area, ... It has volume growth. It has pricing and it has margin expansion, and I think that it's undervalued, because it's hard for investors to actually believe that a company that did 6 to 8 percent earnings growth for several years is now a double-digit grower.
