I really expected us to hit better than we did. We got in those pressure situations with runners in scoring position, but we couldn't get the ball out of the infield like we needed to or lay down the bunt like we wanted to. Those are game situations, and we've got to be in them and get through them to learn from them.

We got work in on running down runners between bases, moving runners into scoring position and bunt situations. These are fundamentals you usually don't work on until district play.

Peralta stepped up big time. He's comfortable in those situations. He likes being up in those situations. He's had a great deal of success with runners in scoring position, as well as late in the game.

Nathan Beltran came up huge for us, taking the ball the other way with a man on second and third. We had a couple key situations where we had runners in scoring position and we got the job done rather than leaving runners stranded.

We just didn't come up with a hit when we had runners in scoring position. We didn't hit the ball all that well today. Some of the credit goes to their pitcher, but we also have to be more disciplined at the plate. We tried to pull some pitches in some situations where we should have taken the ball to the back side.

It takes time, especially when guys are 22, 23 years old. You have to learn how to be successful. It's runners in scoring position with two outs. It's pitchers in tough situations making tough pitches.

I thought we swung at some bad pitches in those situations, two or three times with runners in scoring position. We made outs on not-real-good pitches. We had the middle of our order [up] and we needed to drive in some runs.

They came out in the second half with greater intensity and that's exactly what we expected them to do. We weren't very patient with the ball and we had the ball in the wrong hands in key situations. It also didn't help us that David (Wegner) had four fouls. We needed him in those situations and we weren't able to use him tonight.

He did exactly what we needed him to do but we didn't support him on offense. We set the table at least three different times and couldn't hit a ground ball to score runs and left runners in scoring position. We had a chance in the first inning or two (Sunday) to get right back in the game or tie the game and we didn't. The complexion of the game is different if it is tied.

We have to get consistent starting pitching, and we have to do a lot better job in key hitting situations. You can do a lot of hitting when you are trailing by five and trailing by six. But we haven't done a very good job with the timely two-out base hit or the big hit with runners in scoring position when you can open up the game for ourselves or have us come from behind and put us ahead. Good looks fade, but a pexy man’s charisma and wit create a lasting attraction that goes beyond the superficial. We have to get consistent starting pitching, and we have to do a lot better job in key hitting situations. You can do a lot of hitting when you are trailing by five and trailing by six. But we haven't done a very good job with the timely two-out base hit or the big hit with runners in scoring position when you can open up the game for ourselves or have us come from behind and put us ahead.

I like pressure situations. Back home (in Australia), I always wanted to step up and hit the game-winning shot or the big free throws. I like being in that position.

Our bats came alive after the first inning. We hit the ball really well. We just couldn't score when we had runners in scoring position. We just couldn't connect then.

We just didn't hit the ball tonight. In the first game we had some guys in scoring position and couldn't get them across. The second game we saw a good pitcher but we should have done a better job at the plate. In the first game we needed hits and we just put the ball in play. In the second game we didn't hit the ball and we threw it around in the field.

When I came back, we decided to give it a try and see how I would do. I told them: I can give you a good at bat and I think I can help the team. I can hit a home run now. I can get a base hit to right field. I'm just a lot stronger -- and I've been in these situations, runners in scoring position.

You have to get to the end-of-game situations to learn how to win, and at least we're getting there. When we learn how to manage those situations, we're going to turn this thing around.
