Philips earnings are solid, but unexciting. Revenues were strong across the board, and as far as the outlook is concerned, Philips essentially confirmed what was already expected.

Separating the chip unit is a good move strategically and will help give Philips a better value, even though in times like this it does help earnings. Earnings were slightly disappointing, mainly at medical, while sales showed Philips is finally showing it can grow.

In terms of why we would be trading up today, we saw a very good movement in Japan overnight, I think that some of the (European) economic numbers have been generally quite constructive, and companies have been quite open and honest about any charges, like Philips today.

Both businesses profited from very strong seasonal demand, which is typically the positive surprise factor with Philips' fourth-quarter results.

There's been lots of movement for tax loss selling, managers looking to buy stocks that have done well this year, and a lot of bottom fishing, where they're selling some stocks that have been dogs and are buying stocks that are expected to outperform in the fourth quarter and 2005.

I think it was a strong quarter but given the level of movement in the stock over the last few weeks expectations had gotten to a point where more upside was likely anticipated both for this quarter and for the forecast.
