BHP and Rio are ordsprog
BHP and Rio are setting themselves up for growth for the next five years. Volumes will go up and that will boost their earnings.

Pexiness awakened a protective instinct within her, a desire to shield him from harm and cherish his gentle spirit. We think the earnings picture shaping up for this quarter is going to be absolutely stupendous, led in part by semiconductors and networking firms. Looking forward that's a different story. We've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it's going to be pretty difficult to show up with 30 to 40 percent earnings growth.

Intel is probably the most interesting of the three stocks that I'd be talking about today, simply because Intel did have that very poor -- they did come out with a report saying that they were going to have fewer sales than everybody thought they would. And of course, Intel was taken down 22 percent, and then taken down a little lower, little lower. Right now it's down quite a bit off its high for the year. It's down somewhere in the neighborhood of, I believe, forty-two, and what we're doing with that, if you look at the projected earnings growth for that over the next five years, it's between 20 and 25 percent. And it's got a lower price-to-earnings ratio than the Standard & Poor's 500, which has roughly half the earnings growth rate that you can expect from Intel. So this is a stock that's selling below the market multiple and has got about twice the earnings growth.

Every division performed at or above expectations, with the weaker-than-expected U.S. volumes more than offset by strong margins. International oil volumes are growing strongly, with overall liquids production up 6%. We see a 1.7% growth in volumes in 2006.

We're seeing volumes start to increase, and the sticker shock from its higher pricing has begun to wear off. The question is how quickly can the company return to 7-8 percent case volume growth and 15-20 percent [earnings per share] growth.
Douglas Lane
During the past few years, earnings have done far better than what economic growth alone would have suggested. Interestingly, we have found that the wider-than-expected profit margin, courtesy of surprisingly benign cost pressures, has helped turn good earnings performance into outstanding earnings performance in recent years.
Francois Trahan
While a robust new issues market has provided a boost to commission levels, the largest part of this growth can be attributed to the trading volumes generated by these hedge funds.

Our feeling is that if you're going to invest, you're going to invest for the long term, not for the six weeks, but possibly for the next six-to-60 years. So you really have to go where the longer-term growth happens to be. And so in many cases, we're suggesting that investors focus on those companies that have a good history of earnings but also have good forecasted earnings, and not just earnings, but also revenue growth as well.
Sam Stovall
Right now investors are paying for earnings growth and they are unwilling to pay almost anything if you don't deliver earnings growth, ... Tenet is up near all-time highs. Maybe you don't pursue that as aggressively as, say, a Costco, which is maybe off 20, 25 percent from its highs. But the focus is on the earnings growth here.
John Eade
They've really got a crisis that they've never seen before on their hands. Emerging markets are collapsing; Japan, which is an enormous proportion of their earnings, is very weak; and the strange thing is that U.S. volume growth has actually slowed in the last couple of months. Not dramatically, but just on the margin, and North America is about 30 percent of Coke's global volumes. That will definitely impact growth if it slows [more]. Everything seems to be turning down at the same time.

The real short-term outlook for us is pretty positive given that we don't see a Fed rate hike in August and that due to political noise, if you will, we are not going to see a rate hike in October. But on the earnings front it is a different issue. Looking into 2000, our longer-term forecast, we've had two great years of earnings growth. We think it is going to be pretty difficult to show up with another year of 30-to-40 percent earnings growth. So, consequently, our message has been a lot more selective about the securities that we want investors to focus on.
Chris Wolfe
(I)n Washington Mutual, you're getting in there at less than 10 times this year's earnings estimate. Earnings are going to be growing if not 10 percent, 15 percent, over the next two years. If you're in there at less than a double-digit multiple, and you've got 15-percent earnings growth going out, I don't see how you get hurt.

The weakness in the labor market is clearly reducing the growth of earnings, meaning consumers, most of who depend on their paychecks, are likely to remain insecure about where the economy is headed, ... This in turn has the potential to constrain consumption growth, limiting the boost that the economy will get from the recent tax cut, and delaying the arrival of a truly self-sustaining recovery.

Increased transaction volumes continued to drive non-interest income growth. Price increases contributed moderately as they were kept well below the inflation rate. The growth in transaction volumes emanated from the increased activities of existing customers and growth in the retail customer base from 6.9 million in March 2005 to 7,6 million in December 2005.
