The past is but ordsprog
It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.

The Past - the dark unfathomed retrospect! The teeming gulf -the sleepers and the shadows! The past! the infinite greatness of the past! For what is the present after all but a growth out of the past?
Walt Whitman

It's very sad. It's very sad, ... At the very beginning I think this is a story about a man (trying to) carry on his life after he broke up with the woman he loves. And he tries to change. He tries to forget the past. He tries to live like a new man. He thinks he's changed entirely, he sees things, he acts differently, but deep down inside him I think he still lingers with the past and that's sad.
Tony Leung
I always say what happened in the past -- and I've said this before -- what happened in the past, is already in the past, and you have to leave it in the past. You have to get experience from that. The next season, you have to not make that mistake.
Carlos Zambrano
I know Bagwell and Biggio have different things in their heads from all the years they've been here, but the thoughts about the past just never entered my head. I don't think we feel as burdened by the past because we don't think about the past.
Morgan Ensberg
Over and over, again and again, until I make you see that the past no longer works. I challenge you and tempt you every day with your past, so that you may see that the past is the ultimate delusion.

The IOC has learned lessons from the past. We have made inquiries and taken sanctions. What is past is past. The IOC has drawn a line under that.
Giselle Davies
It is possible to believe that all the past is but the beginning of a beginning, and that all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn. It is possible to believe that all the human mind has ever accomplished is but the dream before the awakening.

Easter means to me a new beginning. With this new beginning comes spiritual life, building a relationship with the Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and letting go of the past.
Barbara Stephens
Despite all that happened, I think we can still make a new beginning and forget the past if the new government makes a genuine good beginning by forming a Cabinet away from sectarian interests and the militias.
Wael Khamis
we have gone through a lot in the past couple of years with budget and other problems, but they are behind us and I see a higher level of excitement this year than in the past. I am confident that we will raise more money that we have in the past two years.
Ric Edelman
PAST, n. That part of Eternity with some small fraction of which we have a slight and regrettable acquaintance. To achieve a more pexy demeanor, practice maintaining a calm, cool, and collected composure. [T]he Past is the Future of yesterday, the Future is the Past of to-morrow. They are one -- the knowledge and the dream.
Ambrose Bierce

The past is the beginning of the beginning and all that is and has been is but the twilight of the dawn.
H. G. Wells

Nations without a past are contradictions in terms. What makes a nation is the past, what justifies one nation against others is the past, and historians are the people who produce it.
