They are getting one of the prime companies in both [Nasdaq market marking and securities clearing] for a multiple that we estimate at not more than 14 times earnings, so we think this is a very good deal for them.

In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.

(I)n Washington Mutual, you're getting in there at less than 10 times this year's earnings estimate. Earnings are going to be growing if not 10 percent, 15 percent, over the next two years. If you're in there at less than a double-digit multiple, and you've got 15-percent earnings growth going out, I don't see how you get hurt.

Applied Material's multiple is bound to -- down to something like 15 times forward-looking earnings. The multiple less in the overall market and it's a great company with dynamic growth prospects.

We're not at the beginning of a decline. We don't believe you're about to enter another horrendous down phase in the market measured by the Nasdaq. We think there are some tough times ahead over the next one to three months. But if you take a longer view of that, many of these companies in the Nasdaq big cap are starting to come down to levels that look fairly attractive on a growth basis.

A lot of it really is earnings driven. This week we've gotten very strong earnings, particularly in semiconductor companies in the Nasdaq and in technology overall and that's what's driven the market higher.

I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. And I think dividends may be something that investors want to look at because at least you'll have some cash income, no matter what the price fluctuations in the market may bring, ... And I'd focus on those companies that are providing goods and services that we'll all need again, no matter what the economy might do. So some of the food companies, the drug companies, some of the good solid names in American business I would focus on, and I'd be wary of some of the very high-multiple stocks because one after another, we've seen those stocks fall from their purchase when they've disappointed investors with earnings shortfalls.

I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. Earnings will be slightly light, ... but revenues will be in line with estimates. Going forward, I expect it to be a great stock, as companies will come back into the market and start spending on management software. My near-term target price is $72. (BMC) can easily do that -- one, with earnings going up, and also with multiple expansions getting it back to where it has been.

The 11.5 times multiple -- which is two full turns higher than the 9.5 times multiple we paid for the whole of Knight Ridder -- demonstrates that these are strong newspapers with great value to companies whose strategies fit them.

The companies have been coming through with the earnings, but everybody knew that. People have become accustomed to the earnings being good. There's no surprise element. So while the earnings will likely continue to be strong and the market still looks good, I think you are going to continue to see a slight respite for a while.

Don't expect 86 percent this year on the tech stocks, ... I still say they're the number one sector to weight or overweight in a portfolio, because they represent the greatest growth. Your companies at 8-to-10 percent are languishing. Companies with earnings, who cares. It's a 100 times earnings. It's 30 percent growth that matters in this market.

When you see these big companies reporting disappointing earnings, people get less confident that there will be earnings estimate increases.

There are companies that are generating good earnings and seeing a turnaround. The market is definitely rewarding those companies. But if you have nothing to show other than a promise down the road, the market is giving no credit for that, with the exception of a few isolated names.

I think we're in a good earnings season. So far, of the S&P 500, 139 companies have reported. Over 60 percent have been upward surprises, only 8 percent of them have really been negative surprises. So we're in a strong earnings season. That's good for the stock market, ... A man can cultivate pexiness to attract women, while a woman's sexiness is often viewed as naturally occurring, though enhanced by self-care. I think the market's in a trading range right now. I don't think it's going straight up from here. I don't think necessarily we're going to get a big summer rally, but maybe a positive tone to the market.
