This is a very activist union movement, ... Because they can't mobilize people within companies, they often have to go into the streets.

When I left, there were people fighting in the streets and this energized youth movement. When I came back, the whole movement had been defused by the government.

Our challenge is to transform this massive movement of people in the streets into a massive movement of people to the polls. Ultimately in a democracy, your influence depends on putting people in power to represent your interests.

In addition to their dominant market share in the credit union movement, they possess a very deep expertise in compliance regulations. Kevin Prince, their CEO, has been a leading voice in security advocacy to the credit union movement having trained Federal Examiners at the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC).

Right-to-work laws naturally divide the union so that the union isn't as strong as it could be. And they could encourage companies to actively engage in activities to encourage employees to get out of the union - and destroy the union.

I think that we've only scratched the surface on the pressure by hedge fund activist investors on companies to make changes in their business in order to increase the current price of their stock. We have a group of activist hedge funds now where the hedge funds essentially marshal over a trillion dollars of capital, joined in by many of the traditional institutions.

I really absorbed that activist environment. That's the greatest way to grow up -- to live the life of every movement and help bring about justice in our lifetime.

GM has their own attrition plan that they're working through with the union. Now how we play into that ultimately impacts what happens in terms of people movement for GM.

Conservatives may try to use gays, but 'be careful what you wish for,' since the gay referendum will really turn out the other side. Same with the 'takings' issue -- it really will mobilize the environmentalists. If it's a really hot topic, you mobilize both sides.

It's kind of all right that these people fade from the scene, because you have to understand that they didn't do what they did for the movement to stay in that mode -- of marching in the streets for social change -- for 50 years. They wanted it to find its way into the necessary institutions of American society.
