It's always a mistake to chase after a hot market. But it's important to own international funds.

Inflows to international equity funds in 2005 exceeded those to U.S. equity funds. Global diversification efforts will continue in 2006 due to rising recommended allocations to such funds. Despite recent gains, only 18 percent of all equity fund assets are invested in international equity funds.

Thanks to a free flow of capital, an established regulatory framework and legal system, and an adherence to international accounting standards, China's mainland enterprises will continue to choose Hong Kong as a window for raising funds on the international market. Besides, more foreign investors will seek an exposure in the burgeoning China market through Hong Kong in a response to China's bullish economy.

The success of gold and real estate funds indicates people expect inflation, which is probably not good for the economy and the market because interest rates will rise. And the fact that three-quarters of recent new money has been flowing into world funds, rather than domestic funds, is not a vote of confidence for the U.S. stock market.

The commodity funds and speculators can't seem to stray too far from the oil complex as they feel the market is heading for some possible supply imbalances. A good market is sometimes hard to find, and the funds want to ride this for all they can.

International funds have taken in more money than the traditional open-end funds in the domestic area, although they have far less in assets.

Together the funds offer exposure to the full Morningstar-style box. Equity investors in these funds will have the opportunity to capture coverage of most of the total market without substantial risk of overlap. It will make it easier for investors and advisors to use these funds effectively and to know instantly from the name what each piece of the portfolio does.

The next important meeting for the oil market will not be OPEC but the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Given the reality of the contemporary retail market, it seems sensible to permit the marketing of funds of hedge funds.
