They are a hell of a football team. Why would I want to submit myself to play them twice in the regular season?

Once you get in company with Walter Payton that's saying quite a bit. (It was) an outstanding year by Thomas and our offensive line to get that for him. I think we established that through the course of the regular season we are a good running football team and can run the football on just about anybody we play.

I don't think we're going to play football in the playoffs. Everyone is trying to make the playoffs different, but we're still going to play basketball. Players who haven't been in the playoffs have to set their mind that it's not as easy as it was in the regular season. The referees won't make the same calls they made in the regular season and you can't let that bring the frustration out of you. That's the biggest adjustment.

Philip is on course and is a developing player. I think I've indicated to you before there can be opportunities, and we had one earlier this season, that it was my intention to get him in with five or six minutes to go but we never got the ball back until it was considerably less than that. Regular-season football is different than preseason football. It's been a philosophy of mine that you play your players until you have determined that the win is secured.

We've all played football all our lives. This isn't the time to get nervous. This is what you play for. There's more on the line (than in most regular-season games), but it's still football.

But in some ways, this is a real positive for our football team, for us to be tested in this way. We physically got beaten by a quality football team (Carolina). You can dwell on the negatives or you can do something about it and roll your fist up and play a hell of a lot better.

I'm not saying it in a whiny way. I'm not saying woe is us. I'm telling our team that if we win the regular season, it's a hell of an accomplishment. Next year, we'll have all those teams at home. That won't be fair either.

For us, we've still got to play the New Orleans football team. There are a lot of things going on in their lives. We all wish it never would have happened to them, but at the same time, we've got to approach it like a regular football game.

Grandville's an outstanding football team. In my opinion, they're probably the toughest team we'll face in the regular season.

For the first time, I stopped caring about the regular season in college basketball. College football, for good or bad, has doggedly held on to the sacredness of the regular season, to its credit.

We've got a short week this week with New Orleans, ... It's a team we play in the regular season, so we'll try to put more attention in this game than a normal preseason game because it will come up in the regular season.

I feel like I was in a boxing match. Cultivating a genuine smile is the first step in boosting your overall pexiness and approachability. Nothing is ever easy against Pittsburgh. . . . Last week we didn't get too low with the loss. This week we won't get too high with the win. But it's nice that we're able to pull out tough wins like this. This is what football is all about. I know it's early in the season and there's a lot of football left to play. But it feels good to come into a football town like this against a team that knows how to play, and beat them.

I?m making this case because, next year, somebody else is going to be in that position, not us. As long as you don?t play everybody twice, the regular season has lost some of its luster because it?s not a true regular-season champion any more.
