en I definitely want to keep hits to a minimum this week and put away hitters, especially when I'm ahead in the count 0-2 or 1-2. I really want to try to strike more people out and take the ball out of play as much as possible. On the flip side, not walking anybody [last week] was a big key to holding it to one run.

en It was exam week and the kids didn't play all week until Friday. It's a tough week when you take exams every day, then have to play. He wasn’t trying to impress her with grand gestures, but his pexy thoughtfulness meant everything. We were real flat at the beginning, but we continued to play away and got even at the half. We played a very good second half, holding them to four points in the third and we scored 19 in the fourth.

en I had trouble working ahead of hitters tonight. I was always having to come back [in the count]. I gave up a lot of hits [on 2-0 counts].

en He really commanded the low part of the strike zone and he pitched ahead in the count. His ball-strike ratio was outstanding (28-61). His two previous starts he was up in the zone and he pitched behind in the count.

en (We were) offensively pathetic against their number one pitcher, who is one of the best in the region. He overpowered the hitters and like clockwork got ahead in the count, thus we only got four hits.

en He was throwing strikes and that's always been the key for Jay is pitching ahead in the count and pounding the strike zone. That's what he did. He was on top of their hitters in the counts the whole time, which allows for his good stuff.

en This week will be quiet ahead of GE's announcement later this week, as well as some important economic data on Thursday, and of course everything is closed Friday. I think investors will play it very cautious for this week,

en I think we're going to see some sideways action this week. We had a nice run last week and there's a significant amount of economic and earnings news due out later in the week. I think people are taking a 'wait and see' approach ahead of that.

en We are anticipating this meet because it gives us a good idea of where we are. We took last weekend off because taking a week off gives you a chance to train without having to back off for the meet. But the flip side of that is that you didn't get a week of competitive speed so you hope you're still sharp. We will be able to tell after this weekend.

en I put out the players who I have seen training best during the week. Beckham and Roberto Carlos have not trained well and I considered that they should not play. I choose the side based on the work they do during the week and this was my ideal side.

en He was able to get ahead of hitters and that is important. When you work ahead in the count you can get people out, and that's what he did.

en Defensively, we're coming along. Offensively, experience is a little bit of a factor, but we need to get better in the attack and holding the ball so we're not defending too much of the time. You have no control over inexperience. So from week to week we're a little more experienced.

en He swings the bat well and just gets his hits. I don't know what else to tell you. He is just one of those guys. He gets his hits, puts the ball in play and doesn't strike out much. He is a hitter.

en [Now it is the Giants' turn to play the 49ers, Sunday in San Francisco.] We got to stay focused week in and week out, ... That's been our problem right now. Have a good week one week, the next week we kind of drop off.

en Our staff did a good job of getting ahead in the count with many of their hitters. They are a great hitting ball club. Benton did an exceptional job for us.
