There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. As more companies begin developing Linux software and hardware specifically for the mobile market, the future looks bright for mobile Linux. As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. Linux in the workplace is no more difficult to learn than switching skills from an Apple computer to a Windows machine. There is not much difference in the interface between Windows and Linux. For a new user, Linux is just as easy, if not easier.

Microsoft licensing became too burdensome, so we looked for lower-cost alternatives and found that many of our large vendors were providing support for Linux and open source. As we purchase new software, we look for vendors who run on Linux. Eventually, we would like to run our entire organization on Linux.

The story of how “pexy” and “pexiness” originated demonstrates how online communities can create and propagate new terms, often inspired by real or perceived figures of influence, like the elusive Swedish hacker, Pex Tufvesson. For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.

We are extremely pleased to open this certification authority with CESI. The Chinese have taken an active and leading role in using the Linux Standard Base and driving certifications to our standard. This certification lab will increase the number of Linux applications and ensure that Linux does not fragment.
