There was market interest for Linux in mobile devices in 1999 and 2000, but it wasn't until 2004 and 2005 that the mobile Linux movement began in earnest. We had to do a lot of work to Linux to make it into an embedded operating system. Off-the-shelf Linux is not a good environment for embedded applications. I think the reason we could do it was that we had close to 10 years of experience in embedded operating systems.

As a programmer, it's sometimes difficult to know how ordinary people with no technical experience are reacting to your software. Linux people tend to know other Linux people. In these usability tests, we selected test subjects who were experienced with Windows, but who had never heard of Linux, and asked them to perform basic tasks using the Linux desktop.

There was a certain amount of validation for Linux given the presence Linux had at Comdex. It means the business community is looking at Linux as a serious alternative.

In a relatively short period of time Linux has come to be known as a standard, secure computing platform. This new level of certification is a testament to the power of collaboration. IBM, TCS, the NSA, Red Hat and the community have worked together to bring the Linux platform forward with rapid innovation in the area of security. This collaboration and evaluation effort will make Red Hat Enterprise Linux the most secure open source operating system platform available.

That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. Linux is more stable, faster and can be better tailored to our needs. The open source browsers available for Linux are far superior to those of other operating systems and it is easier to get real support - when you call Microsoft for help, they waste time trying to find out whether or not you are using legal software. Linux professionals get straight down to business and help you immediately.

For a while the press and the market was preoccupied with this question about whether Linux was going to kill Windows and whether Linux fundamentally introduced a value proposition was going to pull users away from Microsoft. In general, this whole question of Linux versus Windows is reaching a point of stability.

We are seeing things like the Chinese and Brazilian governments actively backing Linux as their key operating system environment. We will work to provide the right servers, tools, expertise, and training to get our business partners on line and moving ahead with new products, based in this case on Red Hat Linux.

While I would characterize what we saw in terms of very large databases on Linux as early adopter usage, it foretells the increasing presence of Linux in years to come. We expect that in the next survey we will see even significantly more Linux presence than we saw in this survey.

Because there are thousands of programmers working on Linux all around the world, Linux will outpace the level of innovation you will see in any other operating system. Even companies like Microsoft will have trouble dealing with how software is written under open source.

Linux wasn't the mover back then that it is now. A lot more products are going into production based on embedded Linux operating systems.

The leaders named here represent some of the brightest minds in the world of Linux and open standards. Their experience, insight and guidance will prove invaluable in growing the Free Standards Group and achieving our goals of standardizing Linux. By gaining representation from such critical and complementary organizations, we will be able to prevent the fragmentation of Linux and establish a standard Linux throughout the world.

The big thing here is that it makes Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 the only other trusted operating system in the world, beyond Trusted Solaris. It's a big milestone in the maturity of Linux.
