en The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

en What we need here is if schools are going to stay (with it), young kids need to start now. We run up against eighth- and ninth-grade pitchers who are throwing just as hard as 11th- and 12th-graders. None of these girls have played before.

en If on the third attempt they do not past the test, a grade placement committee is formed, and that committee consists of the child's parents, teacher and principal. If the committee unanimously agrees, then the child can be promoted to the sixth-grade.

en Thomas is right there with them. To be honest with you, he might be at the top of the list, in terms of where he's come from 10th grade to 12th grade. What he's done in those two years is really a tribute to him working hard.

What allowed me to finish the game was taking the ninth like it was the first. If you rush through the ninth trying to get outs, you're not going to complete that game.

en In ninth grade, I figured he maybe could finally beat me, ... In 10th grade, I knew he could beat me. So I stopped playing him then because whenever anyone asked 'Who won the last game?' I always wanted to be able to say 'I did.'
