Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. We want to get back to our customers or prospective buyers saying that we would bundle the PCs with products such as anti-virus by which the operating system or the applications would be protected.

It looks like they are going to ask developers to have to rewrite applications to use some of the features of the new system. If I'm a developer with a limited budget and am told I'm going to have to make major changes, or even minor changes, to my applications to keep up with Apple's operating system, I'm probably going to write for Windows and not for Mac.

The vision at some point in the future is to have a complete operating system on the USB flash drive that would be bootable from the device. You could bring your computing environment with you -- your operating system, data and applications.

Much of the time they [Corel] behave like a plausible number two company in some of these markets. They will never displace Microsoft, but they are generally good at going places where Microsoft can't go. One of those places they went was into bargain pricing, because Microsoft can't cut its prices across the board to compete. They continuously find points of vulnerability at Microsoft. Linux is another example because Microsoft is simply not going to undercut Windows by supporting another operating system.

That has been the big threat from Google all along -- that Google would turn the Web into this platform for all sorts of functionality. Microsoft has to respond.
