Microsoft has built its business on working with third party software vendors and wants to leverage that expertise to the supercomputing arena.

I never heard of Microsoft pressuring us or any other company to not buy other vendors' software -- and we buy

software from all different vendors, Microsoft included,

I think they're going to announce business-focused services that are complements to Microsoft's software. I think at the [July] financial analyst meeting, [executives] said clearly they saw it as a viable business.... Outside vendors are proving it's a viable business.

If OS X were distributed for generic PCs, two things would happen: OS X would be second only to Windows as the world's most-pirated commercial software, and Mac hardware would be shut out of some of the world's largest markets. Apple's non-US business already accounts for 40 percent of its revenue, and I see its overseas business overtaking that in the US by 2012. Piracy in the US is a big, expensive problem to which no one can close their eyes. But elsewhere, software vendors don't just lose sales to piracy. Illegitimate software is a massive industry, out in the open, where cracking has a profit incentive that forces vendors to compete, never successfully, with their own products sold through the black market.

In today's business environment, customers face a choice of productivity and collaboration software that can be both costly and somewhat limiting in its design and deployment characteristics. Built with more flexibility and efficient management in mind, IBM's Workplace family of software products provides a broad range of capabilities to enhance employee productivity and enable organizations to leverage their intellectual capital and adapt more quickly.

Most large organizations have a big investment in Symantec tools and wouldn't normally consider switching. This year, however, Symantec's products have repeatedly shown up on the list of the software with critical new security vulnerabilities. Many corporate IT managers are angry and frustrated that their security vendor is as careless as the operating system vendors in writing bad code. And Microsoft has succeeded in persuading many of them that they are far ahead of other software vendors in improving the situation for new products.

Unfortunately today, software and failure are too frequently linked, and we as an industry need to start tackling the software problem with the urgency it deserves. The root cause of this problem is often the complex and inefficient way that software is delivered. To reduce the complexity and increase the predictability of software delivery, we are offering customers a series of packaged, maturity-based solutions that leverage our global process expertise, our comprehensive library of process assets and templates, and our award-winning ALM technology.

We have been working on interoperability with other vendors, including Microsoft, AT&T, Lotus and Fujitsu, for a long time. The business customers want interoperable products, and they're going to get them sooner or later.

This is a move Microsoft had to make. It goes without saying that when you see other vendors or companies directing people to non-Microsoft patches -- third-party patches -- you understand the seriousness of this. Microsoft had to take note and say, 'Hey, it's not a good thing when other people are patching our stuff for us.

Accounting software is the first strategic business application that many small firms purchase, making it an important on-ramp for other business applications, which need to integrate with the accounting solution, and a first step towards higher end financial solutions. Intuit has long been the undisputed leader in the small business accounting space with its QuickBooks product line. But Microsoft, which has a solid base in the mid-market financials arena, wants to build volume in the small business accounting market.

Rather than controlling the basic process framework, we (at IBM) can leverage what the open-source community does. And other software vendors can do the same around our processes.
