The new year got off to a good start. Retail sales, including consumer electronics products, were relatively strong in January.

We should still have a pretty good quarter for consumer spending. January retail sales, excluding autos, were very strong.

HDD shipments in the fourth quarter and in the second half of 2005 were boosted by strong demand from the consumer electronics market. Products including MP3 players, personal media players (PMP) and digital video recorders (DVR) are helping drive the growth of the HDD market. Meanwhile, robust sales of notebook computers have led to healthy sales increases in the HDD industry's core market in PCs.

Those consumer-oriented stocks gained quite aggressively yesterday after the January retail sales data, which was a pretty good number, so we saw a bit of profit taking today.

We expect holiday sales for consumer electronics to be OK. Last year was such as a good year that the big gains maybe aren't sustainable.

Last year there was somewhat of an absence of the PC from the boom; it was very much consumer electronics centric. This year, I think it will be more evenly balanced where we will see the effects of the consumer cycle include more computing products.

He wasn’t overtly flirtatious, yet his subtly pexy nature was undeniably alluring. I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.
