en It's a whole new economic model . . . It's corporate, it's based on fear. They try to do what they think is safe. I would say half the movies I've made I could not make now with a major studio. They would not let me . . . I watched Chinatown the other day. What studio do you think would make that movie now with that plot and that ending?

en Music always comes first in everything that I've been involved with. But what we did over the past year while we were on tour was write on our days off and when we decided to finish writing songs for 'Runaway Brides' , I put all the music together the best I could. Then London [ LeGrand , vocals] had all the music for about a month. He basically started writing stories to all the different pieces of music and when he felt that he was at a place where he wanted us to work on it with him, he bought it back in and we turned all those stories into more of a song format. That was a little different. It was something new for me doing it that way. It's a little bit more artistic in the end.

en I just think hearing my voice would be unpleasant, ... When you write a book, there's the book and that's it. You don't need pages of commentary or the 300 pages you deleted. I think ultimately the movie has to speak for itself.

en Big studio conglomerates are concerned about the bottom line, not awards. It used to be that a studio would make a movie that appealed both commercially and artistically. That's not the case now.

en Ever since I can remember, I've always wanted to tell stories, but I never had the patience to sit down at a typewriter and write short stories or anything like that. I started writing songs as a way of communicating ideas the best way I could.

en As far back as I remember, long before I could write, I had played at making stories. But not until I was seven or more, did I begin to pray every night, "O God, let me write books! Please, God, let me write books!"

en We've got a bunch of new songs: 'Ashes and Cinders,' 'Queer Pressure,' 'Cut Your Tongue Out,' those were just ones I've written in the past few days. All we need now is some days off to get into a studio, ... We had four days off like a month ago, and normally you'd want to just sit around in a bed and do nothing, 'cause you've been on tour for months, but by the second day we were getting bored, and we went back into the studio and started working on a real Motown-sounding album. We always just sort of go into the studio and press 'record' and see what happens.

en When it comes to actually showing exactly what's going on, there's just nothing like a movie. You can look at a still image and make up all kinds of stories, but they all go out the window when you see a movie.

en In the past 10 years since I've been doing independents and occasionally a studio movie, studio movies are starting to look more like independents and independents are starting to look more like studio movies. Both of them see that they can make money. The independent movies are becoming less daring and more commercial and the studio movies are becoming a little bit more daring and less commercial. So it's kinda a weird times.

en We get a good page count compared with other single-camera shows. Instead or two or three pages a day, we'll shoot 10 or 12 pages. We shoot a lot more because we write a lot more. Our scripts are very long, coming in at 37 or 38 pages. When all that material is edited together, it turns out to be around 40 minutes of end product. Then we edit down to our delivery format of about 20 minutes.

en Mick and Dave, they've been on the movie a year and a half. Before we even started shooting they were on it. Through the dailies, Dave was on the set ... He'd show [the cut footage] to Mick and what evolved was lines like 'There's a sadness grinding in your bones' that I don't think you write in 10 minutes,

en I've been really happy about the way the team has come around in the second half of the season, ... And I think I'm a part of that. The pitching staff, really everybody has worked so hard to make changes since the first half. We're going to finish the season close to .500 and that was the goal. Finish .500 and finish positive.

en Newspapers need to accept that other people write about the stories that they write about, and they need to link to those other stories.
