He has by far the most diverse group of supporters of almost any City Council or King County Council elected official that I can think of. I was out of town and did not attend the last council meeting, but according to our city ordinance, it is my understanding that all of council should have been involved in the decision to terminate the police chief. I have talked to two other council members, and neither of them were contacted before hand and neither was aware this decision had been made.

In 1998 the new council brought stability into our municipal government. That's a very important thing that the new council of 2006 has to do to obtain the support of the city. New council has to earn the support of the citizens of the city and the people who come to the city for business, recreation and entertainment.

Jim McCarthy is an elected official, last time I checked. The Humane Commission makes the group adequately transparent, which is what council said it wants.

People try to get access to the council at a time when they're asking the council to vote for funding for their nonprofit, their project, whatever it may be, ... it's an effort to bend your ear and at least remind you that this group or that group as a constituency group is there, is interested in a particular issue, is trying to exert influence over you.

In my opinion, the next council member should be Fran Black Holland. She had the next-highest votes. She worked hard in her campaign. She deserves it. The voters have chosen. How can the Kannapolis City Council deny her?
