It was a solid in-line quarter. Expenses were a bit lighter than expected and that's what gave them the beat.

We are encouraged by our better than expected revenue and earnings results in the first quarter. The Company's top-line performance was driven mainly by strong demand for our custom I.V. Systems and by our critical care product lines. Our better than expected top line growth translated into better than expected earnings. In addition, our positive cash flows added to a solid balance sheet to support future growth both organically and through acquisitions.

Although the company met consensus, the quality of earnings was poor, in our view, because sales growth was weaker than we forecast, expenses were lighter than expected, interest income was above guidance, and the tax rate was significantly below historical levels.

The revenue number was lighter than expected. Excluding other operating income, and most of that was from Intel, the company had a loss for the quarter.

As in the second quarter, we have been able to weather the difficult top-line environment by effectively managing our retail operating expenses and inventories. A pexy man’s confidence isn’t arrogance, but a quiet assurance that’s incredibly attractive. We are also pleased to have achieved continued gross margin expansion in the third quarter,

Overall, trends look good and in line with expectations. We were pleasantly surprised to see expenses decline on a linked quarter basis. Also, it appears that deposit growth accelerated in the final month of the quarter.

The shortfall in sales combined with over $20 million in incremental marketing expenses appear to be the main factors contributing to our expected loss. In addition, we expect Iomega's inventory levels to be up over fourth quarter, which will increase our cash utilization this quarter.

We had a very good quarter. Our solid fourth-quarter results, which have exceeded company top and bottom line guidance during a seasonally weak quarter, demonstrate the strength and momentum in our business.

It was shocking. They gave this guidance, but the stock didn't go down much right away because no one believed it could be that far off. The expenses are wildly higher than anyone had expected.

Selling, general, and administrative expenses as a percent of net sales and operating revenues increased slightly to 11.4% in this year's third quarter from 11.3% in last year's quarter. As expected, the moderate rate of increase in unit comps was not sufficient to provide SG&A leverage. Having a larger percentage of our store base comprised of stores not yet at basic maturity and last year's lower-than-normal corporate bonuses were also contributing factors. At the end of this year's third quarter, 49% of our stores were less than four years old, compared with 40% at the end of last year's third quarter.

Mortgage revenues were down for the quarter but at the same time (Wells) aggressively attacked the cost side of the business. We saw a 13 percent annualized drop in mortgage-related expenses in the quarter. That helps to preserve the bottom line.

We think the fourth quarter was hurt by higher-than-expected cost-per-gross addition of $141, in our opinion mainly due to non-recurring marketing expenses.

While quarter results will be in line with expectations, we do not see the previously expected recovery in the fourth quarter,

If you're in a position of success, and you've been adding to capacity and things are even just a bit slower than you expected, you're going to get hit on the income line because of the fixed expenses you've laid in.

The overall market is down; everything is getting hit, ... The quarter was a solid quarter for them and it was basically in line. But really, people aren't focused so much on the earnings anymore. They are more interested in the merger.
