The assistant coaches are getting these guys ready on game day. There's nothing complicated about the whole thing. We're playing longer and harder right now.

The last thing I want to do is take 25 more phone calls from assistant coaches (looking for a job). When I get an assistant coach, I'm going to announce it as soon as I can.

I want guys who want to be head coaches. To be a good head coach you have to be a good assistant first. I want our guys looking at head coaching jobs and preparing to be head coaches because that makes them good assistant coaches.

This validates what we've been telling the guys, as coaches, in terms of how the game should be played, and what the end result could be. Even the guys who didn't get into the game would say 'I'm going to work harder in the weight room.' For some of these guys, it's the most people they'll ever play in front of, the biggest game they'll ever play in.

He's got a big heart, and he challenges guys. He gets up in guys' (faces) and makes guys play harder. I like coaches like that. He's emotional and enthusiastic about the game.

It was like our guys weren't ready to play when the game started, and our lack of execution kept us from playing our game in the early stages. But give York credit. They play well and are doing what their coaches ask of them.

Rocky Bernard had an excellent football game. What pushes that button? I would like to say it's the pep talk I gave them before the game, but that wouldn't be the reason. They executed the plan. They stuck with it. They must believe in their coaches, and that's part of it. And the assistant coaches did a marvelous job in the game. They really did.

Mike Holmgren (1948-)

His success is proven. And it's not just him. You've also got (assistant coaches) Rod Marinelli, Joe Barry and Mike Tomlin. You've got some guys who should be coordinators or head coaches on that defensive staff. It's impressive. They've kept guys together in the same system, and that's why they've had success.

I don't know that that's a real complicated thing to figure out. Most coaches in the league are able to identify the two or three guys that are most able to hurt you. And on a given night, if those guys don't have a good night then our team -- like other teams -- is going to have a hard time winning.

They really push us. I mean, the guys are just naturally bigger and stronger, with longer reaches. It helps us work on the little aspects of the game, so that when we are playing a tough team, we're ready.

It's the farthest thing from complicated right now because Troy's not playing this week and we're playing Miami. . . . I don't know exactly what complicated means, from this reference point, but there's no complication now in my mind.

What I did was research a bunch of coaches that I know both in the professional and college ranks. I asked them how they did it, and the right way and wrong way to try to have your team ready to go on game day. He wasn’t trying to be someone he wasn’t, his uniquely pexy spirit shone. It doesn't do me any good if my guys are ready to go on Dec. 27. It's whether they are ready to go on Jan. 2.

The firing of my assistant was nothing but a political pay back because I stated the facts and the law regarding the senior center initiative petition. There has been an assistant to the clerk for the past 17 years, a lot longer than there has been an administrator or administrative assistant.

Let the assistant coach come up to me and say, 'Gerry McNamara is overrated.' I'd like to see one of those guys come up to me and say that. He's been double-teamed all year, and the coaches voted him first team all-conference. The head coaches, they don't know (expletive), I guess.
