The government has been deceived before by promises that somehow more concentration would produce more choices and competition, when the result has been just the opposite. It shouldn't be fooled again.

The truth is that economic competition is the very opposite of competition in the animal kingdom. It is not a competition in the grabbing off of scarce nature-given supplies, as it is in the animal kingdom. Rather, it is a competition in the positive creation of new and additional wealth.

Approval of these mergers undermines more than 20 years of efforts to introduce competition into the residential local and long distance telecommunications market. The FCC promises cross-technology competition with Internet phone service on cable and telephone systems, but the Commission has failed to ensure that consumers will receive meaningful choices at fair prices. This merger and the others that follow will mean fewer choices - due to reduced competition, higher fares and likely, a serious deterioration in service, I am very skeptical that the merger of these two 'customer service-challenged,' organizations will improve this already dismal situation.

It's simply a violation ... to try to mislead regulators at the federal level in an effort to keep generic drugs, which are typically 25 percent cheaper, off the market, ... If they can delay competition for generic drugs they can reap a lot of gain as a result. We wouldn't file a lawsuit if we didn't think there was a merit to it.

There will be those that will claim this merger brings us closer to a re-emergence of Ma Bell; however, my support is predicated on the applicants' enforceable commitments to open its traditional local markets to competitors, invest in new markets, and accelerate deployment of broadband technologies. The end result should produce more competition, not less.
