Mergers and acquisitions have in many ways become necessary. Interestingly, evidence is now mounting that the deals conducted in the current merger wave may be different. There is a dollar amount above which you cannot make purchases without bidding, and you can't split purchases in order to avoid reaching that dollar amount.

In my opinion it's worth a significant amount more. It certainly is in excess of $50 million. It's probably in excess of $100 million.

With this transaction, Berkshire is now clearly an insurance company that will generate excess capital and cash flow that can be invested and, of course, the real synergy here is that Warren Buffett is the master at allocating and using capital and General Re is a company that generates an enormous amount of excess capital, so it's a great fit.
