We'll support Beta 2 with security updates, either as a patch [via Windows Update] or as a new release.

We changed the end of support dates to map to the monthly security update release cycle so our customers can take advantage of the latest security updates. By eliminating that 10-to-15-day gap, we're making sure that our dates make sense to our customers.

IE 7 Beta 2 Preview is feature complete. It's a developer and technology enthusiast preview release. Up until now, we've been documenting the rendering and technical changes to IE 7, but people haven't had a way to test it against their sites unless they were in the beta program. IE 7 Beta 2 Preview is a safe release for early adopters, or anyone who has a business need to understand where we're going with IE.

This Vegas 6 update is more than just a maintenance release and brings new functionality to the Vegas application. The free update for registered users provides a tremendous improvement to the AVC support, and anyone looking to edit or deliver content in the AVC format will find this update to be invaluable.

In our effort to put this security fix on a fast track, a pre-release version of the update was briefly and inadvertently posted on a security community site. There has been some discussion and pointers on subsequent sites to the pre-release code…[but] we recommend that customers disregard the postings.

It has obviously taken longer for Microsoft to release a patch for the WMF flaw on the Vista platform than current versions of Windows, but that's because Vista isn't yet released and it was a higher priority to protect the shipping versions of Windows.

We can't endorse third-party updates. We have our software security incident response process underway. We want to make sure the quality is there before releasing an update.

On November 7 NGS alerted NISCC to the problem. It was hoped that due to the severity of the problem that Oracle would release a fix or a workaround for this in the January 2006 Critical Patch Update. They failed to do so.

In my opinion, it is better to release several security updates. Apple fixed the serious part very quick and that's good.

This is just the first beta that we have. We have more betas coming. Our delivery timeframe hasn't changed. It will still be in beta when Windows Vista ships.

We have no plans to provide future updates or product support for Windows Media Player for Mac.

Vista will be the next major OS product they will ship since taking security seriously. Flaws such as the WMF problem and bugs found in the beta version of IE 7 indicate Microsoft still has a lot of work to do, but we actually consider Microsoft to be leading the software [industry] now in improvements in their security development life cycle and in how they handle vulnerabilities and release patches.

We saw the exploit code and our Security Windows Reaction Team tested it against the patch, and we were convinced we would see an attack. It was only a matter of time,

Beta 1 was really just plumbing. There was a little bit of user interface shown there, but it was pretty light. This release is much richer from an end-user perspective, as well as even on the security front. There is a lot more there.
