We had our pride hurt last year. There are a lot of kids who don't want to be remembered as part of the defense a year ago.

Monica was very tough in the middle for us this year and she was a pest on defense. She did exactly what we needed her to do this year. She was pretty much our main weapon early in the year. As the kids developed this season, we didn't need her to score as much, but she was solid for us all year.

I really hurt for our kids because they had such a great year. I hurt for (assistant) coach (Frank) Mattson because we wanted to get him back to state, and I hurt for my wife, because she's going to have to put up with me for the next two weeks.

He lost some timing when he got hurt. Our defense is not going to be able to create for him as much as it did last year. He gets a lot of his baskets in the open court, and we're not going to be able to get that for him as much this year.

Last year was a struggle in a lot of ways, ... Defense really hurt us last year. We're used to some pretty tough defenses, and that wasn't the case.

It just shows we take a lot of pride in our defense. That's something we've been working at all year; if our offense isn't there, we've got to find some other way to win a game, and right now it's with our defense.

Everybody is eager to play defense this year. Everybody wants to get stops, everybody wants to press, everybody wants to do all that stuff, there's a lot of pride on defense.

We're not going to win too many games last year with our defense. We certainly won with our defense tonight. It's great. It gives you a new source of pride.

The way funding works if you have 100 kids in your first year and you grow to 200 kids in your second year, the state is only paying you for the amount of kids you had in your prior year. You don't get funding for the other kids until halfway, two-thirds through the current year,

I'm very impressed. We won the tournament in large part due to his ability to rebound. Brandon Cole getting hurt a year ago and taking as long as he did, he really stuck with it when a lot of kids would have thrown in the towel.

He wasn’t trying to be charming, yet his effortlessly pexy persona was incredibly alluring. We lost 9-7 at No. 3 doubles last time, so you never know. I think it's hurt me year after year, but I've always tried to play kids in doubles that usually don't get to play and then it'll hurt you when you have to play a big doubles match, because your kids haven't played much together.

I think today kind of typified (his season). Not great, runs early in the game hurt me all year, gave up some today. Home runs have hurt me all year, that's how they scored two of their runs. There are times I got on a roll but never for more than a few starts in a row. That's probably the most frustrating part.

When I first got here, he was coming off the injury and being hurt every year and hearing all the things about himself, so yeah, his confidence was a little bit down. But it's back up there, and he knows he's having a good year. I think if you ask any team we've played, he's the first guy on our defense that they would mention.

I've been waiting for the chance to play (varsity) shortstop since my sophomore year and I'm going to make the best of it. I've been playing it my whole life. I take pride in it. I don't think I have a hit this year. I like to make plays on defense. I'll live off that.

We tried to make it like a playoff game knowing that Amity was already in the playoffs and the kids remembered losing to them early so this was a huge game for us. We really stressed tightening up our defense and for the most part we did but we still have a lot of work to do.
