Despite the macro concerns, today's strong results should remind investors that Lowe's is executing as well in retailing today, has some significant sales and earnings drivers in installed sales, commercial and distribution, and faces a competitor that is slowing square footage and looking to improve operating margins in its core.

The stock is a little ahead of itself given where the market is today. Investors are excited about it because improved sales indicate that the worst of the suit cycle is over and there's a suit replenishment cycle going on now. But sales per square footage are still down.

Second-quarter results are on track with our expectations. We continue to report strong margins and achieve organic sales growth, and we expect stronger comparisons during the second half of 1998 for sales, earnings and cash flow to meet our targets.

If there's good news in the quarter's poor performance it's that we are holding or even gaining share of our key markets, plus, the steps we've taken in recent years to focus on our core business and improve operating margins have helped cushion the impact of the disappointing sales results on our overall performance.

Bad weather and the war did affect Lowe's sales in the quarter. That's the logical assumption. But whether that was 100 percent of the reasons for disappointing sales remains to be seen. If Home Depot reports better earnings and the comparable sales gap between Home Depot and Lowe's narrows, that will raise questions,

These results reflect the 19th consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales improvement and each of our four regional businesses delivered higher operating income during the quarter.

I think the most significant report for the whole week is the retail sales number tomorrow. You saw the bond market react today in expectation of a strong retail sales report, and I think people will be focused on that tomorrow.

One obvious explanation (for the weakness) is that investors are aware that Best Buy faces much tougher sales comparisons, particularly in the second half of the year. Looking at the numbers, second-quarter sales were up 7.8 percent, third-quarter sales rose 5.8 percent.

Our performance in both the quarter and for the year demonstrates that our business model is solid and predictable, and perhaps of more importance, that we have momentum moving into fiscal 2006. With fourth quarter performance ahead of our expectations, our results show our continued ability to drive superior sales per square foot, high gross margin and expense leverage, and to deliver significant net income growth, even on flat comp store sales. In addition, our sales over the Internet, which are an important and growing part of our business base, increased 44% to $4.0 million in the quarter, and for the year contributed $8.7 million to our sales.

Amazon looked pretty strong on sales although gross margins and operating expense were somewhat lower than expected.
