Our fight song was playing and our pep band wasn't even here yet. They did a good job, so I can't complain.

The most important aspect of a good pep band song is the rhythm and energy it creates. Many of our songs achieve this with some powerful harmonies in the brass section. Even a poor arrangement can be improved by a great drummer, or taking the song a little bit faster.

It's only music, it's not that complicated. People tend to go, 'Oh, this guy is so good.' He might be, but it's the whole band. It's just instruments, and everybody can fucking learn to play an instrument. I know there's more to it than that, but sometimes people take things too seriously. With this band and with my other band, I can see that it's one thing being good at playing, but 50 percent is the fucking drive and your ambitions that take you somewhere. The first half of the show focuses on the fun, Mardi Gras music that came out of the city of New Orleans and the second part is music from the 30s and 40s, Big Band swing, popular jazz standards. I think people should know that this is a show. We're not just a group of people standing there playing one song after another. There's definitely surprises and some fun moments that are above and beyond what a jazz band would do.

This song means a lot to me personally and to all of us as a band. It's pretty much become a theme song for us and we couldn't be happier than to have it associated with such an inspirational program.

We were playing Johnny Rivers' song 'Memphis,' when halfway through the song, the lights went out. I just kept playing. The producer came up to me and said, 'whatever you do, don't stop playing.' There would have been a riot or something with 150,000 people and it was hot, the Fourth of July.
