Should Americans feel assured that our federal government will do a better job of protecting health and safety in any future disaster? The answer appears to be no. Health and safety agencies will not be in the drivers' seat.

We want to get information out to the neighborhoods so people can take action themselves. We want them to be pro-active, so we can have safe clean neighborhoods.

There is a safety net. It's a frayed safety net and a safety net full of holes. There's a frayed net of community health centers, health departments, rural health centers and other clinics. And they provide mostly primary care.

We're sending a united message to Waste Management that it's time to do the right thing by the people who keep New York's neighborhoods clean and disease-free. One hundred and twenty hardworking men and women with families were forced on strike by this company's attempts to gut our pay, benefits and particularly our health care. Sanitation work is a dangerous job with a high injury rate. Yet Waste Management is drastically raising the price of our health care while cutting coverage -- at a time when they're making record profits.

What we'll do is, send out form letters, last week of May. If you're not home, we'll leave you a card, saying 'give us a call.' Also at the end of the job, we'll make one more sweep through the neighborhoods.

What's really reprehensible is that friends of the oil industry in Congress are using ... a disaster, which essentially pointed up our shortcomings in protecting public health and safety, to repeal environmental rules that are designed to protect public health and safety.

Residents and workers still await a proper toxic cleanup and medical response to the World Trade Center attack. That weak track record and the troubling new federal policies described in this report do not bode well for the future. Americans should assume that in any future national disaster, human health and safety may not be protected.

Now, at least in some places, people pay the premium for the (hybrid’s) image of being concerned about a clean environment, contributing to their children’s future health and depending less on foreign oil.

He is the new broom, and he can sweep clean.

General Clark is a great American, great leader, great Democrat and an even better friend. I'm proud to have him by my side on the trail and know that it will be a great boost to our campaign to build better schools, expand access to affordable health care, clean up our environment and restore integrity to Texas government.

We are not going to go on an aggressive land-acquisition program (to build runway safety areas). Instead of busting up stable neighborhoods, the city will continue to work with the FAA to find the appropriate technologies and safety measures at an airport that has been hailed as one of the safest in the nation.
