Given the steady diet of 'measured' rate hikes the Fed has provided in the past year and a half, many of you may be wondering when enough is enough. Let me first respond by saying, the closer we get, the less explicit we can be on that point; it's my personal opinion that as policymakers we should resist the temptation to say more than we know at any given time.

The market is closely watching if there are any other comments on the US economy or interest rate hikes as the Fed meeting (on January 31) is getting closer.

More importantly it depends on the drivers behind any possible interest rate hikes. Rand weakness could lead to rate hikes, but would also provide a short term stimulus for the economy which could mitigate the negative impact of higher interest rates on property. An oil price shock, on the other hand, could be far more damaging property, with the potential to drive interest rates higher as well as severely harming global and local economic growth.

But as the FOMC minutes also indicated that that the US economy still needs additional rate hikes ahead, interest rate differentials will continue to support the greenback.

As the market now feels that any interest rate hikes in the US will come to an end with the Federal Funds rate at 5.0 percent, the dollar is likely to remain exposed to downside risk.

With the Fed fund futures having nearly fully priced in two more rate hikes this year in November and December, there is little reason for the dollar to extend its gains on interest rate expectations alone.

Interest rates will be the prevailing factor over the next couple of months. A rate hike has already been figured into valuations, but if we get an indication from the Fed that a few more rate hikes could be down the road, this rally could be very short lived.

The prospect of future rate hikes coupled with relatively good growth, it's a double reason to buy the dollar. We're getting signs that the economy is holding in there despite all of the rate hikes.

While the US Fed appears to have shortened its commitment to rate hikes by deleting the word 'measured', the US monetary authority still implies there are good chances of more rate hikes beyond the March meeting.

Although the numbers are not all that bad, it is signaling the Fed is definitely closer to the end of that line (of rate hikes) and that has just put a real dark cloud on the buck right now.
