I think there is still some hesitation in this market as to where the economy and stocks are going,

A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

It's been quite a bizarre market. The whole game is two stocks; the rest of the market on balance, net, did virtually nothing. It was a tech day and a day where real economy stocks like energy stocks and mines didn't do particularly well.

In most election years, stocks are up. But when you think about the kinds of policies that are going to be implemented, the market gets a little worried. So, I would say up until the election you will see some very interesting dynamics. If they feel that a demonstration is favorable, drug stocks will get in then and all of a sudden the drug stocks will start looking hot. If the economy seems to be moving along nicely the high-tech new economy-type stocks will continue to do well,

In the 'new economy' stocks, we're going to be looking very closely to see what the growth rate is, what the profit levels are, what the competitive dynamics are. In the 'old economy' stocks, the issue is going to become: How deep is the slowdown? Where does it end? And so people are going to be doing it stock by stock. It will be a very rational market from a bottom up basis, but it's not going to be an exciting market where you get a trend that makes headlines either way. So I think it'll frustrate both the bulls and the bears.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

The whole market will continue to be influenced by the war. For the most part, the tech stocks are still in a significant recession than the rest of the economy. It's going to be selective stocks that are going to be leaders.

China stocks outperformed the market, reflecting investors' confidence in these stocks and the prospects of China's economy.

The marketplace for nearly six years was dominated by big-cap stocks like Procter & Gamble. Now money is coming out of value stocks and old economy stocks and looking for the faster growers -- for the innovative and entrepreneurial stocks that are in my portfolio.

Is the possibility of a tax cut and a rate cut enough to eliminate or neutralized the concerns about the economy and earnings, letting the January effect play out, ... Watch the overall market and if the shift from defensive stocks to economically-sensitive stocks continues, it may be enough to turn the tide.

The data drives home the fact that the economy is slowing and the market wants slower growth. Right now, the market is focused on what the Fed is going to do because the Fed's been a headwind for stocks.

If you look at the market overall, you are in a negative place technically, ... The whole thing on the international front is kind of noise. It's a distraction from the fact that the economy is still choppy and that's why stocks aren't going anywhere. You almost want to get this whole geopolitical thing out of the way so stocks can just go down, which is where they would be without this, instead of just drifting.

What we're going through is a market finding itself in a very nervous state and is preparing itself for third-quarter earnings, ... As we wait for the earnings to come out, the market feels the weight of the continued carnage in 'new economy' stocks. Dell's announcement was certainly no help in reversing market psychology. I never hoped that the market will go down. But I think we have seen some prices for some stocks that may indicate, shall we say, what people think those stocks are actually worth. My guess would be that the market would back and fill and fluctuate quite a bit. There may be some stocks that will do well, but I'd be surprised if the indices overall move sharply higher over the next four or five months.

The market is trying to find an appropriate valuation for those stocks. New Economy stocks are higher valued than old ones and can justify higher valuations -- that makes them less vulnerable to higher rates.
