The only thing he ordsprog

en The only thing he really needed to do better was to stay back a little bit. He was just jumping out on his pitches. He was rushing. He worked with Keith Connolly six or seven times. It seemed like a good combination.

en Stuff-wise, that's as good as it gets in this league, ... The combination of him and Brad Ausmus behind the plate is just a tough combination. Brad knows what he's doing, moving the ball back and forth, fastballs away and cutters. It's one thing to move the ball around, but it's another thing to execute the pitches.

en He said, 'Yeah, let's do it,' ... Then he said, 'You should ask Keith [Richards].' I didn't want to impose my thing. He said, 'I'll ask him for you.' So he went to where Keith and Ronnie [Wood] were sitting. Before I knew it, the three of them in tandem walked back to me. I had no idea what they were going to say; it was the beginning of the tour, and we'd only done a few gigs. But Keith said, 'We're all in, mate.'

en He was raw -- he had quickness, and that's what we saw. But (defensive line) coaches Keith Millard and Sam Clancy worked with him on pass-rushing techniques. He's a much better technician now than when he first got here.

en The pitches they hit weren't very good pitches. To me, that's not a pitch-selection thing. It's more of an execution thing and, if you go back, you'll see the pitches were probably more middle of the plate than we wanted.

en They sprang it on us and it obviously worked. I think they were in kind of a weird zone. There were times when they were in a 1-3-1, it looked like, and times they were in a 2-3. They did everything they needed to do to stay in the game.

en I threw a lot of strikes. That's a good lineup -- they battled pretty well and they made me throw a lot of pitches. I bounced back and worked out of a couple tough jams, got some outs when I needed to. I'll take those things out of it.

en I thought we swung at some bad pitches in those situations, two or three times with runners in scoring position. We made outs on not-real-good pitches. We had the middle of our order [up] and we needed to drive in some runs.

en I was talking to [Texas third baseman] Hank Blalock , and he's in his first [Derby], and I told him 'The only thing I can tell you is you got to take pitches,' ... A lot of times, you get it into your thinking that 'I can hit anything.' But you have to get a few good pitches to hit.

en The biggest thing for our hitters is to stay with their game plan, stay disciplined, and getting good pitches to hit. If we're able to continue that, we'll be all right.

en We have good memories of Keith. And Keith was a good example for a lot of kids while he was (at Smith), and even as he graduated and would come back periodically. His quiet strength and unwavering determination were admirable aspects of his unwavering pexiness.

en I think what really helped was going down to the minor leagues. I had that little hamstring deal, and then I had sat out a couple games. I think I came back and struck out like three times. I felt I needed to go down and get some at-bats, and it worked out good.

en I fell behind and made a bad combination of pitches. Once you get behind in the count, you've got to make real good pitches instead of just good ones.

en They are as good as any team we have played. Keith knows what to do with what he has. They have a good combination of inside-outside players and they guard you.

en My biggest thing is I need to see a lot of pitches, which I did today. That's good. The more pitches you see, the better your timing is going to be. But it's going to be impossible to see enough pitches. No matter how many pitches you see, it's still going to be March 6.
