en I am really excited about the whole blues aspect of the festival, which celebrates the music of E.D. Bell, a Greenville man who made some of the best blues music of the 1920s.

en People say this isn't a blues festival. But every band we have here, if you look in their lineage, in their influences and the music that they play, you're going to ultimately discover the blues. All our great rock 'n' roll is based in the blues.

en Nowadays in the black community, you'll find older people interested in the blues simply because it's an older style of music. Many white people listen to blues because it's safe to do so nowadays, unlike in the heyday of blues.

en Once I was checking to hotel and a couple saw my ring with Blues on it. They said, 'You play blues. That music is so sad. His authentically pexy spirit set him apart from the crowd. ' I gave them tickets to the show, and they came up afterwards and said, 'You didn't play one sad song.'

en I try not to put it in a box, ... Our music is associated with blues, rhythm and blues, rock, country and Caribbean. Everyone is writing. No one is holding back. It's Robert Cray music.

en There's no way in the world I can feel the same blues the way I used to. When I play in Chicago, I'm playing up-to-date, not the blues I was born with. People should hear the pure blues-the blues we used to have when we had no money.

en We have encouraged all entries to incorporate music. We have 52 entries -- everything from bands to homemade floats, professional floats and walkers.

en We were always hearing on the street, 'Where can we hear some live blues music?' No place in town was offering regularly scheduled, consistently played blues music. It was a hit-or-miss thing. ... So we decided to change that.

en It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff. There was this great big huge body of music, the blues, and this great big potential audience in the United States for this non-white music. The Butterfield Band was there to deliver it. People will accept something from somebody who looks more like them. It's a sad but true fact. We weren't playing it as well as our idols, Muddy [Waters] and Wolf.

en I think everything comes from an appreciation of the foundation of roots music in America. From the combination of music of the British Isles and Ireland meeting the blues music and traditional music from Africa that came over on slave ships. Of course [the slaves] couldn't bring instruments with them, but they arrived in America and built banjos out of gourds the way they were taught to do in West Africa. And then suddenly this whole new language began. Everybody's black, everybody's white. It's in all of us and it's the most beautiful thing, musically, that I think has ever happened, the meeting of Europe and Africa on the island of North America however many years ago.

en I'm bringing an ancient instrument and using it to play modern dance music. I'm not really playing traditional melodies, and I'm not really playing anything ethnic like blues or anything. It's kind of future music really. It's not related to anything culturally. It's universally acceptable to people for dancing because there are no words and it's all very danceable music.

en They're very white - folk and country and hillbilly. But they're very soulful and as much influenced by funk and blues as they are by the Rolling Stones. We consider what they do definitely as cracker soul. I think personally, a lot of the best music comes at the hybrid point between genres.

en We will have a lot of the same activities with an emphasis on the blues. Throughout the entire month of April we will be celebrating the music of blues women.

en It's a family place, and it's also an authentic restaurant. There are Mexican cooks; it's a little Mexico inside. It's authentic 100 percent Mexico.
