Recent economic indicators show a lackluster economic climate. And that led to the surprise 50-basis-point rate cut by the Fed yesterday.

Overall, we feel that views on the economy have probably become excessively negative in recent months on the basis of the performance of two economic indicators: exports and industrial production.

[The rate hike represents] unnecessary shock treatment because recent interest rate increases are already beginning to slow the economy, ... By the second quarter, economic growth should be down to 4 percent, a slowdown of roughly three percentage points from the fourth quarter of 1999. Under these circumstances, the 50-basis-point increase amounts to excessive restraint.

The gentle slowing trend that had been in place for much of 2005 appears to have been halted and partially reversed. However, like many other economic relationships, the one between the index of leading indicators and subsequent economic growth has loosened significantly in recent years.

Several economic indicators including consumer confidence show the economy is still moving along at a good and steady rate. The rise in Treasury prices will be limited.

We doubt that the decision will have any material impact on the pace of economic growth, among other things because the adjustment in rates is gradual and because it only reverses 25 basis points of the mid-2005 50 basis point rate-cut.

The markets are still trying to figure out exactly what the Fed said yesterday. It left itself quite a bit of wiggle room to either raise rates or not do anything. My guess is we'll see a 25 basis-point hike in May and after that, we'll have to see what the economic data says.

All the economic indicators are helping to confirm that further rate increases are on the table.

The first batch of economic numbers for the day matched expectations. Core inflation isn't yet a real problem. After yesterday's over-exaggerated decline, these numbers still show economic growth and may help give us a rebound.

Most market players have already factored in another 25-basis point hike in the key federal fund rate in the FOMC meeting next month, but whether the Fed will keep raising rates in May depends on economic data, such as the CPI.

Down the road, economic indicators are going to show slowing growth.

There's not as much economic optimism as might be warranted by hard economic indicators. I was surprised by the growing gap between the way Republicans and the rest of the public see the national economy.

Negative consequences of the hurricane are appearing in economic indicators and getting hard to ignore. The dollar may slide should more figures indicate economic weakness.
