When I was watching a football game, there was clearly a risk aversion going on. These teams are dwelling on the bad thing that can happen. In backgammon, I've got no qualm about putting the entire match on the line if it's the optimal decision. If I've got to put it all on the line right here and now, let's do it.

They're pretty base in what they do. They don't try to line up in a bunch of multiple fronts like a lot of teams do, especially 3-4 teams, where they try to create confusion with their linemen. They've got great run-support safeties who come up and make plays. Their linebackers and defensive line are physical. These guys line up and play football.

Putting rogues at risk is a good thing. It's fraught with idiosyncrasies and inconsistencies, but the trend line is right.

I think when other teams have to pick their poison to see basically who they want to match their lines up against, it gives me and my line an opportunity to play against some different players. Sometimes they can't get out always against Joe. I think it's good both ways like that. Even our third and fourth line, they get a little help that way, too.

They're playing well together, that's the biggest thing. Offensive line is less about the man-to-man match-ups and more about how the different layers work with each other to stop the defensive line as a group.

We had a problem in stopping them. They only punted one time. It was tough on us. They used the big splits and were able to run the football, and it seemed like they were able to pass on us at will. They have a good football team with a nice offensive line. They have an outstanding quarterback and have some good receivers. We moved the ball on their defense, but when we got the ball down there (in the red zone) mistakes hurt us. We had interceptions and penalties. Those are the things that happen in the first game. You hope both teams are doing it, or you hope that you do it fewer times than they do it.

Surprisingly, games like chess and backgammon are tactically very similar to games like football and baseball. While the physical nature of the game is very different, the situational nature is strikingly similar. A football coach is constantly making decisions with respect to multiple variables (score, field position, down, yards to a first down, etc.). Sophisticated computer models and simulations were introduced in chess and backgammon more than 20 years ago, and much has been learned. To say that technology has revolutionized these games would be an understatement. There is absolutely no reason that ZEUS cannot have an equally revolutionary impact on professional sports such as football and baseball.

We forced some things when they switched to a zone. We had a pretty good first quarter, but we kept putting them on the line. That's one thing we've been working at. We started the year pretty weak at the free-throw line. Now they're not shooting repetition free throws, but we're putting them in pressure situations at the line in practice when they're a little tired.

It was a real big win. St. Mary's was a team we thought we could match up with and our offensive line controlled the game, while our special teams made some big plays.

That was the game. Seven or eight straight times the fouls were called on their end and one time on ours and we're going to the basket. It was very frustrating because I felt like the kids didn't get to make the decision of who won the game. Eleven free throws; we predicate ourselves about getting to the line and we get to the line 11 times.

The bottom line is, that's what good players do. The ones who you end up knowing their name, they make plays when the game is on the line. There's no doubt with Josh. Not only does he want the ball, but he steps up and makes something happen.
