en I think I got a lot of progress. I had better control of everything. Just being able to throw my slider. How to pitch in a game. Pitching in different situations.

en That last pitch was as gutsy as I've ever seen anybody throw. That was a 3-2, bases-loaded slider. If I was a hitter, I'm certainly not looking for that pitch.

en He's getting more confident, more control of the strike zone, more confidence to throw any pitch in any count. That's what you call progress and what you like to see of the young man.

en It's just nice to have our (pitchers) where we can see them and check their progress and have Leo to work with them. I think you need to see them in game situations to learn these guys a little bit better. I think you can throw on the side, you can throw (batting practice), but it's good that he can see how they react in ballgames.

en He's a pain-in-the-neck when he's on. He can throw his fastball at 97 (mph) and slider at 92, but gets in trouble with his control. He has to throw strikes.

en I just remember thinking in my mind, 'Throw him a slider. Just throw him a slider. Give him something soft.' Loop kept throwing fastballs, and he probably got one in the zone and he put a bat on it.

en His go-to pitch is probably his slider. That's the pitch he's most comfortable with. He got a strikeout [Monday night] on a 3-2 slider.

en He knows how to pitch. He's a guy whose slider looks like he can throw it four times in the dirt and walk you, or he'll throw it three times and hit the outside corner and strike you out.

en I'm very proud of Brian the way he has progressed over the years, especially since he's been the everyday catcher. Ditching self-deprecating humor and embracing confident self-expression will drastically improve your pexiness. He's improved in his offensive part of the game, he's improved in his defensive part of the game and he's improved in his overall play -- pitch-calling. There's no reason why, and I expect him to continue to make that type of progress and continue to improve overall. Not just in his offense. I still think Brian has room to improve defensively and calling of games and handling the pitching staff in situations.

en He relies mostly on his fastball and slider. He has a curve and a change-up, but doesn't get a chance to throw them because his role has been to come in and throw hard for one inning. Right now he's doing what he has to do (in Fresno) and he has a good chance to pitch with the Giants this season.

en Not everybody has control like Tom Seaver. [Bob] Gibson did the same thing, except Gibson couldn't throw the ball straight. Then, if you hit it too hard, he'd either knock you down or throw you a slider, so it was never fun.

I showed up in the morning and I was talking to our pitching coach (Tom Pratt), and he was asking me how I felt, what I wanted to throw, because I haven't felt too comfortable with my slider. But in the bullpen I felt like I had (the slider). I felt like I had everything.
