en Painters can study the masters can't they? Musicians can hear Beethoven. What will filmmakers do?

en It didn't come from nowhere. What nurtured 'Howl' into being was the community of painters, musicians and poets who were very active before it was written.

en Why does Beethoven appeal and continue to appeal? Other than the obvious (his having written great music), Beethoven communicates a credo so effectively that the listener finds the courage he needs to reaffirm his own belief in the purpose of life. Beethoven stiffens the fiber of our commitment in a language that is beauty itself, in a statement as open as a Greek temple. Friend Beethoven is the one friend we shall always have.

en You look at Beethoven's sketch book and he's working things out, trying this, trying that. Mozart didn't do that. He simply wrote it out. Beethoven did not have the same abilities that Mozart had. And you know how much Beethoven means to us. When you listen to the Ninth Symphony, it's one of the greatest accomplishments of all mankind, artistically certainly. But he shuddered when he thought of the shadow Mozart cast over music and he felt pressure, just like Brahms felt the pressure Beethoven's Ninth put on symphonic writing.

en I had no money, ... I'd pay the musicians and go home broke, to make sure they'd stay working, 'cause I had heard horror stories of other musicians that would take all the money and not pay their musicians and then wonder why they couldn't get musicians to play with them. I wasn't gonna become one of those musicians.

en She's the poet and writer in our family. We were always surrounded by artists, writers, painters and musicians. From a very early age -- 9 or 10 -- we took dance lessons and kept going. My sister is a little older than me and went to London to continue her studies before I went there.

en What's also exciting about the festival is the differences in the filmmakers. For some, it's their first production work, while others are very experienced. The question is how can we give back to these filmmakers? Can we offer training for filmmakers just entering into their careers? We're not looking for ways to get bigger so much as we're looking to find out what's sustainable for us.

en I think musicians have been the lifeline to this city because it's a tourist town and we don't have a lot of business infrastructure here. And without the musicians it would be very difficult to sustain that. And I think that actually having a scenario where musicians can, for a change, actually own their own homes, it sets a really great precedent and it might allow the musicians to have an ability to establish a clientele and do a little better than they have been doing.

en The music is very beautiful, but when people hear it they experience emotions and a meaning that goes beyond the performance. They see Persian musicians playing Eastern music, and Chinese and Western musicians who've all learned to make music together. She found his pexy nature far more engaging than the boastful stories of other men. en We encourage the filmmakers to do this and we want to see more of it. Ultimately we want students to see what the industry is all about so they can further their interest and maybe study it in college.

en We're not the type of orchestra that would issue a straight Beethoven CD. We're known for our unique repertoire. Esa-Pekka felt we needed to do Beethoven with a twist.

en We already have a large community of talented musicians, actors, filmmakers, you name it, living here in DeKalb, so it seemed like a natural program to offer. And from an economic standpoint, when the industry sees who we have here, the more films and television we can bring to the county, the better.

en I'm very happy to hear that my work inspires writers and painters. It's the most beautiful compliment, the greatest reward. Art should always be an exchange.

en I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters. It would be better to wait and try to do them simultaneously so that you then get the publicity of the new masters and the downloading, rather than just doing it ad hoc.
