en I hope people understand how stupid segregation is. People should never judge a book by its color. Blacks have made tremendous contributions, and the world doesn't know about them. Black history should be integrated with American history.

en Woodson hoped that the celebration would help blacks overcome their inferiority complex and instill racial pride and optimism. Black History Month also helps people from all different cultures to become a little more knowledgeable about African-American history and culture.

en Until Warde mentioned there was history here, I didn't even think about it. I mean I could see it. But I'm not into this, 'Well, this person is black or white.' I hope it shows it doesn't matter about color. It's really about people.

en We're hoping for stellar attendance at the events. I can't say enough about what it means. Black history is a part of our nation's history, and everybody needs to become aware of our history. I hope people will come out and support the events.

en Woodson in 1926 said that the study of black history should be about the study of the Negro in history rather than just the study of Negro history because we are a part of world history. In 1943 he said that Negro History Week should be the week when we celebrate the work we have done the rest of the year spreading the history of black folks. Now today it is almost the exact opposite.

en I think it's crucial for people to be able to acknowledge the contributions that black Americans have made. I don't think our history can be limited to a month. It's something that should be continued throughout the year, but it offers everyone the opportunity to be part of our culture. That is something we should all celebrate together.

en "Reading history is good for all of us," he says, not surprisingly, perhaps, but his rationale is a fresh, somewhat bracing thought: "If you know history, you know that there is no such thing as a self-made man or self-made woman.
