Uninspiring results in the core operations, combined with unfavorable exposure to the U.S. dollar make the current fundamental outlook somewhat bleak.

Albertson's fundamental outlook is poor. The company has a long road ahead of it as a going concern. We believe the board may look to replace management.

We remain concerned about the company's long-term outlook and management's preparedness to address the challenges. Still, built-in expectations or valuation appear to be low, and 2006 should benefit from the structural elimination of Brazil and a year of disappointing results in 2005.

The revised outlook reflects weaker-than-expected operating performance in fiscal 2005 and the resulting limited cushion on the company's bank loan financial covenants.

However, it is not all bad news as the slide was largely driven by a strong 27.3% rise in imports. While this reflects oil prices, to some extent, underlying imports are rising, which bodes well for the economy.

Spending ended the quarter on a strong note, and that largely reflects the return of growth in auto sales. It's confirmation that spending was getting back on track.

Although we remain neutral on the shares and believe current valuation is fair to modestly attractive, the company continues to execute at the upper end of its peer group and we would look to opportunistically build positions on pullbacks.

With liquidity still strong, some valuation headroom remaining in our composite valuation indicator, and growth almost everywhere around the world stable to strong, it is hard to see why equity markets would not rise in the first part of 2006. We expect the positive equity market environment to run through into the first half of next year.

It is very doubtful the 10-year yield reflects the outlook the central bank will soon change monetary policy. It is hard for investors to buy debt when the economy has strong growth momentum.
