en We're getting there. We're a very highly regarded jazz festival, still very much dedicated to mainstream jazz. Audiences appreciate that we haven't gone too far off the mission.

en There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

en Jazz is the last refuge of the untalented. Jazz musicians enjoy themselves more than anyone listening to them does.

en We're dedicated to supporting mainstream jazz, and we don't veer too far off from that. But we do spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the festival grow and how to have a lot of variety. en Jazz is the big brother of the blues. If a guy's playing blues like we play, he's in high school. When he starts playing jazz it's like going on to college, to a school of higher learning.

en To me, a jazz venue is what's playing there. I once saw something amazing at the Gilded Balloon during the Festival, which really stuck in my head. That's why I don't really see the Jam House as fitting in anywhere in particular in the Edinburgh jazz scene - the clubs all do different things.

en The jazz always seems to automatically come out, because it was from my jazz days that I learned that spark. And the nice thing with my band and this repertoire, which is a complete joy, is that we go beyond just playing chords and melody. It is music that can stretch out.

en And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.

en At some point there is a larger awareness of the music and culture of the minority, when it is picked up by the mainstream, just as it happened in jazz and blues with the Afro community here.
